Smash of Confederate Defenses
April 9, 1865
Nine Black regiments of Gen. John Hawkins's division helped smash Confederate defenses at Fort Blakely, Alabama. Capture of the fort led to fall of Mobile. Sixty-eight U.S.C.T. had the highest number of casualties in the engagement.
