Progressive party convention

Progressive party convention, meeting in Philadelphia, nominated Henry Wallace for President. New Party made major effort to attract Blacks. Approximately 150 Black delegates and alternates attended the convention. The keynote speaker was Charles P. Howard, and attorney, publisher and former Republican from Des Moines, Iowa. Thirty-seven Black ran for state and local offices on the party ticket. Ten Blacks ran for Congress. The party attracted few Black voters but forced the Democratic party to make serious gestures to hold the Black vote.
