UNIFREIGHT Africa Ltd has posted an inflation-adjusted profit before tax of $19 million despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its operations. BY KUDZAI KUWAZA In its financial results for the half year ended June 30, 2020, Unifreight chairman Peter Annesley said although the freight company had not managed to meet its targets due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it had remained profitable. “Our half year results for 2020 were slightly disappointing versus our forecasted figures, but given the completely unexpected downturn created by COVID-19 shutdowns in April and May, we are pleased to report an inflation-adjusted profit before tax of $19 million which is 18% above prior year,” Annesley said. He said they had fared well when compared to how other companies had fared as a result of the pandemic. “Given the volatility of the reporting currency making the results very difficult to understand, a very good measure of performance is volume of which our tonnage was 22% down on prior as at half year. Given that some of our customers were shut down completely and many others were below 50% of normal trading volumes, I think we can be very grateful that we came out relatively unscathed and were able to remain profitable,” he said. The Unifreight chairman said the third quarter had shown a dramatic comeback with cumulative revenue on budget being 5% ahead of prior year and net profit being 36% ahead of budget in real terms. He added that their key performance indicators were moving in the right direction with improving yields, improving fuel consumption levels which can be attributed to a new fleet, decreasing labour costs per tonne and overall improvement in cost controls. Annesley said despite being confident of being on the right track and ending the year on a high, the parlous state of the economy had prepared them for a difficult year ahead. “We are focusing on what we can control, working hard to maintain a positive attitude and keep searching for pockets of opportunity that have been created, while at the same time protecting shareholder value,” he said. The freight company said the proposed transaction in which Birmingham Investments, Birmingham Properties and Tredcor would cease to be subsidiaries of Unifreight would not have an effect on its share capital and shareholding structure. Unifreight did not declare a dividend for the 2020 financial year.

Unifreight did not declare a dividend for the 2020 financial year.","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.net/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2020/11/5d81eefb-4c05-447f-bc8a-fd71d2193ba6.jpg","ImageHeight":330,"ImageWidth":600,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"7B933AE8-03CD-4CB2-9499-82145E19CFCF","SourceName":"NewsDay Zimbabwe - Everyday News for Everyday People","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.newsday.co.zw","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":null,"IsSponsored":false,"SponsorName":null,"SmallSponsorLogoUrl":null,"SponsorUrl":null,"HasSmallSponsorLogo":false,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":null,"IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-11-10T04:00:34Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":188363,"FactUId":"BDCD5E01-6BBF-4C99-B1DE-60DEDF86CE4D","Slug":"unifreight-weathers-covid-19-storm","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Unifreight weathers COVID-19 storm","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/unifreight-weathers-covid-19-storm","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":false,"SponsorRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/Sponsor/e1937d8b-561e-4826-8d6e-da76009d44da/bbf364f5-89e0-4070-bb3d-31672ff3bb2a/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cristoreyny.org","SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/ed0c293f-4b65-4a18-b1ce-317bb7c1239a/bbf364f5-89e0-4070-bb3d-31672ff3bb2a/https%3A%2F%2Fwilmingtonjournal.com","DisplayText":"

ACCRA — When it comes to food security, the challenge is not always about producing more – it’s also about quality: producing food that is wholesome and preserved safely. About 690 million people go hungry each year. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to add between 83-132 million people to this number based on socio-economic factors. Even before the pandemic, about half of Africa’s citizens were food insecure. And much of Africa’s food is of low quality or lost before it even reaches the consumer. Africa has made some great strides in food production over the last decade even though it continues to be a huge net food importer to the tune of US$47 billion in 2018. But this pandemic has halted successes chalked in fighting poverty and disease and progress towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). COVID-19 is not the only challenge. In the past year, Africa has grappled with locust swarms, droughts, flooding and conflicts which have slashed livelihoods and brought hunger to many in the region. Restrictions on movement during lockdown also impact on commodities like seeds, fertilizers and farming implements which has, in turn, led to decreased food production. Many crops were not readily accessible and farmers struggled to get their produce to markets. And then, adding to the crisis, the continent’s poor storage facilities were not up to scratch. COVID-19 showed the fault lines in our food production systems and this has compromised the livelihoods of millions of farmers. Food systems on the continent — including production, storage and processing, distribution and transportation, retailing and promotion — are dominated by traditional methods which are vulnerable to unexpected crises. The Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme, one of African Union’s continental frameworks under Agenda 2063, urges African governments to increase investment for agriculture by allocating at least 10% of national budgets to achieve agricultural growth rates of at least 6% per annum. Also in the declaration on Food security and Nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic, African ministers of agriculture committed to putting in place measures that will reduce food post-harvest losses and make more food available in the markets. Now, as countries struggle to recover from the impact of the pandemic, there is the need for an action plan to consolidate efforts at these policies. Past interventions for Africa have focused on food production through improvement on crop varieties and yield. But we are not living in normal times. We must do more than simply look at production. Resilient systems need efficient storage and production processes. Post-COVID-19 Africa must invest in appropriate storage technology which is lacking in most developing nations and this causes unnecessary waste and considerable loss to their economies. For example, it is estimated that 60%–70% of food grains produced in developing nations are stored in traditional structures either in threshed or unthreshed at the home. However, most traditional

Coronavirus Makes for an Oily Situation

As coronavirus cases peak once again in Europe and the United States, the anticipated continued weakened demand for oil could see global energy producers able to tweak an agreement on production cuts till 202 — as per an announcement on Monday by Saudi Arabia's energy minister. The Covid-19 pandemic — as with most industries worldwide, has also seen the dampening of the price of oi which has affected the key revenue for several oil-producing nations.

Mohammad Barkindo, the OPEC Secretary-General, outlined the current industry situation, \"Yes we have seen, or we are seeing a contraction of nearly 9.8 million barrels a day for 2020, but 2021 forecasts are continuously being revised upwards of 6.5 million barrels a day at the moment. And you have seen the reaction of the market after the U.S. elections, so there is no cause for alarm.”

The OPEC+ agreement aimed to ease those cuts to 7.7 million barrels per day through the end of the year and to almost 6 million barrels a day for 16 months beginning in January 2021.

And Post-Covid-19 Pandemic?

Sultan al-Jaber, the CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, remains positive about the post-covid-19 possibilities, \"We know that the world will still need oil and gas when all of this is over with and done, even at the height of the lockdowns of March and April the world still consumed 75 million barrels of oil per day.\" The OPEC+ countries — whose African member states include Libya (1962), Algeria (1969), Nigeria (1971), Gabon (1975), Angola (2007), Equatorial Guinea (2017) and Congo (2018), are scheduled to reconvene November 17th.
