The president also stressed the importance of keeping the economy open after months of stifling movement restrictions.

He urged citizens not to drop their guard and continue adhering to the health rules, such as wearing face masks and respecting curfew times.

South Africa has recorded just over 800,000 coronavirus infections - more than a third of the cases reported across the African continent - and over 20,000 deaths.

These solutions were presented during a meeting held on Thursday in Luanda, in a promotion of the Union of Small and Medium Enterprises of Angola (UPME).

For Beatriz Franck, head of UPME, the Angolan government failed to contemplate, at this stage of the covid -19, entrepreneurs in fiscal relief.

Beatriz Frank said that entrepreneurs has suffered with the emergence of the pandemic of covid-19, leading many, in the last two months, to pay only 50% of the salary of their workers.

Russia's state arms seller Rosoboronexport announced in April the first contract to supply assault boats to a country in sub-Saharan Africa.

While this news might not have caught much international attention, this new deal adds up to a pattern: Russia is building its path to gain a foothold in Africa and broaden its export map for arms on the continent.

Russia's eye on Africa

Until now, Algeria remains the biggest recipient of Russian arms in Africa, followed by Egypt, Sudan and Angola.

In the new millennium, Russia was a predictable choice for Angola to sign new arms deals -- and within the last five years, Angola has become the third-biggest African client for Russian arms after Algeria and Egypt.

Soviet-era connections allowed Russia to secure its monopoly on arms deals, and Moscow completely wrote off Algeria's $5.7 billion in debt in 2006.

Ndalatando — A multidisciplinary committee of the Ministry of Health has been in Ndalatando, province of Kwanza Norte since last Wednesday, to monitor and test people living in the areas where the three positive cases of Covid-19 were detected.

The information was provided to Angop by the Vice-Governor of Kwanza Norte for the Political and Social sector, Leonor da Silva Garibaldi, who said that the team, which includes technicians from the rapid response and epidemiological surveillance office of the Ministry of Health, should work in the province for five days on testing and tracing contact of the three positive cases of Covid-19.

Leonor Garibaldi said that sanitary cordons have been imposed in two areas of the city of Ndalatando, namely the Indios street and Sambizanga neighbourhood, where local authorities are creating strategies to strengthen the supply of some basic services for residents, mainly drinking water and essential goods.

The director of the Provincial Health Office, Filomena Wilson, recalled that the three people detected with Covid-19 were evacuated to reference units in Luanda, while actions to locate and test all the people who remained in contact with these positive cases are underway.

Luanda — Sagrada Esperança is the second Angolan representative appointed to dispute the African Confederation Cup in Football, benefiting from Interclube's withdrawal, already communicated by a letter addressed to the Technical Sports Council, allegedly for financial reasons.

According to a statement from the Angolan Football Federation (FAF), the withdrawal of Interclube left Sagrada Esperança without competitors for the draw that should indicate the team to represent the country in the second largest continental competition of clubs.

In the current season, Sagrada Esperança reached the semi-finals in the Angola League Cup and was one step away from the final, in case of victory or draw against Interclube, in the second leg of the semi-finals, after winning 3-1 in the first leg.

The national champions in 2005 and the Angola Cup (1988 and 1999) have already participated in the Confederation Cup on three occasions, in 1992 (eliminated in the second phase), 1998 (first phase) and 2016 (quarter-finals).

On the date of the definitive interruption of the first division National Football Championship (Girabola2019/2020), Petro de Luanda occupied the first position and 1º de Agosto were second.

Luanda was founded by Portuguese explorer Paolo Dias de Novaes as St. Paul of Luanda in 1576. It became the capital of a Portuguese colony in 1586 and became the capital of independent Angola when the former Portuguese colony gained its independence in 1975.  Luanda is also the largest city in Angola with an estimated 2009 population of over 4.5 million. The city is located in the northwestern region of the country on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The most common religions are Catholic, Baptist, and Methodist but missionaries of many faiths reside in Angola. The citys major sports are basketball, soccer, and tennis.

As major port city for Angola in the sixteenth century, Luanda became the center for commercial, political, and cultural affairs. The Portuguese also used Luanda as their major slave trading port until 1836. The end of slave trading caused a temporary decrease in Luanda’s economy and export activity but by the 1840s, the city exported palm and peanut oil, timber, ivory, cotton, coffee, tobacco, and cocoa.  Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries Colonial Portuguese authorities invested in port and rail infrastructure to expand agricultural and mineral exports.  By 1940, the city had 61,208 people including nearly 10,000 white inhabitants. After World War II new waves of colonists from overcrowded Portugal arrived.  The growth of the European Quarter often meant the displacement of Africans to slums on the edge of the city.

Despite the poor housing conditions, Luanda offered more employment and educational opportunities than in the rural areas and increasingly drew Africans from the interior.  Many of these new residents in turn began to support independence movements and call for the end of Portuguese rule.  Luanda became the center of nationalist activity.  It also became the leading place in the colony to celebrate indigenous culture with events like the annual Carnival festival.

Angolan independence came in 1975 when by that point the city had 475,000 people.  Independence was

Luanda — The Institute of Assets Management and State Participation (IGAPE) has extended to June 23 this year, the deadline for applications to be submitted for the public tender of 12 State-owned agro-industrial companies.

The extension of the deadline, according to the justification of IGAPE that reached ANGOP, aims to meet the requests of the various investors who are unable to visit the assets, as a result of the sanitary cordon imposed in Luanda during the prevailing State of Calamity in the country.

This time, investors interested in the public tender for the privatization of 12 agro-industrial enterprises located in various parts of the country should submit the applications until 3 July.

The companies are Caconda, Matala (Huila), Caála (Huambo), Catabola (Bié) and Ganda (Benguela) Silos complexes, the Cubal agro-industrial complex, the Dombe Grande (Benguela) cold stores, the Namibe cold store, the Dombe Grande tomato and can processing plants, Namibe cold store and Malanje slaughterhouse.

IGAPE says it will have to issue a special permit so that investors can verify the current state of the companies.

Henry Francis Downing was an author, playwright, consul and sailor. He was born in New York City in 1846, the son of Henry and Nancy Downing. His family maintained an oyster business that had been owned by his grandfather, Thomas Downing, a well known freeman.  His uncle was famed New York businessman and civil rights leader, George Thomas Downing.

In 1864 Henry Downing enlisted in the Union Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He began his service on board the U.S.S. North Carolina and was transferred to the U.S.S. Pawtuxet in December of 1864. Navy records listed him as having deserted in 1865, though it was later revealed he left the ship to attend his stepfather’s funeral, and his mother had obtained his discharge so that he could assist her.

After the Civil War, Downing began a journey around the world.  He reached Liberia where his cousin, Hilary Johnson, would later become president of Liberia from 1884 to 1892. Downing lived in Liberia for three years where he was a private secretary to the secretary of state.

Downing returned to the United States and in 1872, reenlisted in the Navy and served for three years. Most of his time was served on the U.S.S. Hartford which operated off the coast of East Africa.  With considerable time spent in both West and East Africa, Downing was one of the African Americans most knowledgeable about the African continent and its politics.

Returning to New York in 1875, Downing became a messenger and clerk of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In 1876 at the age of 33, he married a woman named Isadora.  The couple had two children.

By the 1880s, Downing became involved in New York politics and was a supporter of the Democrats and New York Governor Grover Cleveland. When Cleveland was elected President in 1884, Downing was rewarded for his support by an appointment as U.S. counsel to Luanda, Angola. He served in this post from 1886 to 1887, leaving because he was unsuccessful in getting significant American trade with this African nation.
