The Speech that Made Obama President

Nationwide protests have taken place since October 7 despite the disbanding of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit.

The demonstrators have been accused of attacking police stations and personnel.

The rallies which are mostly attended by young people have become avenues to vent against corruption and unemployment.

Rights groups say at least 15 people have been killed the demonstrations began in early October.

guest column:Solomon Mutambara/ Delphine Serumaga THIS year marks 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action which set out 12 critical areas of action aimed at removing the systemic barriers that hold women back from equal participation in all areas of life. While progress has been made in broadening socio-economic opportunities for women and affirming their rights in the Constitution, challenges remain. Indeed available evidence of the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic is showing a deepening of inequalities and persistent violations of the rights of women and girls, and further exposes acutely disadvantageous conditions that make women more vulnerable to withstand the effects of natural disasters. There are reported increases in cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and financial distress due to the informal and survivalist nature of economic activity women are involved in. Much is required to ensure policies and strategies are addressing these gaps, to ensure resilience and recovery by women in both urban and rural areas. Thus, as the world commemorates International Day of Rural Women, this is an ideal opportunity to reflect on their crucial role in agriculture, food security and nutrition, and management of pandemics at the community level Fifty-six percent of communal farmers in Zimbabwe are rural women. Restrictions in movement in response to the spread of coronavirus exposed a lot of rural women to limitations in participating in this sector, yet they play a significant role in agricultural value-chains, but rarely go beyond subsistence production. A gender assessment of COVID-19 and the countrywide lockdown carried out by UN Women Zimbabwe revealed that women reported an increased burden in taking care of children, performing household chores among other routine duties they have at household and community levels. In addition, the Zimbabwe Resilience Building Fund (ZRBF) Outcome Monitoring Survey Programme Learning Report revealed that young female-headed households are particularly vulnerable to shocks and stresses, as their mobility and livelihood options are limited to caring for younger siblings in the home. The key constraints to resilience for women because of COVID-19 range from time poverty, lack of access to healthcare, reduced access to scarce resources and lack of information. Before the advent of COVID-19 pandemic, rural women were already struggling in regard to enhancement of their livelihood options due to, among others, insufficient infrastructure and services in rural areas. ZRBF recognises that rural women’s exposure and sensitivity to pandemics are exacerbated by existing gender dynamics at household and community level. Thus, UN Women Zimbabwe through the generation equality campaign is calling for strengthening of rural women’s sustainable livelihoods and wellbeing. Investment in rural women is a means of attaining food security and empowering women and girls as they move from subsistence agriculture to becoming active participan

Opposition candidates in the Ivory Coast on Sunday called for a \"civil transition\" from incumbent President Alassane Ouattara's government, a day after the election.

Presidential hopefuls Pascal Affi N'Guessan and Henri Konan Bédié called for a boycott of the vote, saying it was \"unconstitutional\" for Ouattara to run for a third term.

N'Guessan said it was the \"end\" of Ouattara's mandate.

\"Opposition political parties and groups call for the opening of a civil transition to create the conditions for a fair, transparent, and inclusive presidential election,\" he said.

Deadly clashes erupted in Ivory Coast in August when Ouattara said a reform allowed him to reset a two-term presidential limit to run again, angering the opposition who called it an \"electoral coup\".

At least 30 people were killed in the pre-election violence, reviving fears of the 2010 vote which sparked a civil war that saw over 3,000 deaths.

Ouattara originally said he would step down and hand over the reins to the younger generation. But the sudden death of his chosen successor in July forced a change in his plans.

Votes are currently being counted from more than 20,000 polling stations and the result, by law, should be released in five days.

Numbers for voter turnout are yet to be released.

But Africanews' Yannick Djanhoun in Abidjan said some offices were not even able to open their doors to voters.

BY Garikai Mafirakureva CHIREDZI residents last week called on government to reduce military expenditure in the 2021 national budget and channel more resources towards social services. The residents were speaking during a 2021 national budget consultative meeting led by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Budget, Finance and Economic Development chaired by Zaka North legislator Rabison Mavhenyengwa. Human rights monitor, Marko Shoko said Zimbabwe was not at war, hence the Finance ministry should channel more resources towards education, health as well as social welfare and stop burdening the country with unnecessary military expenditure. Patricia Zunga said morale in schools was low and the government should seriously look into the plight of teachers and pay them a salary commensurate with the work they do. She also said there was no need for government to continue to allocate huge amounts to the Defence ministry. “Government should consider allocating more money towards the construction of new schools in Chiredzi,” Zunga said. United Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association programmes officer Constance Chikumbo said public hospitals were in a sorry state with no medicine, burdening the poor who could not afford to get treatment at private hospitals. “Immobility of police officers is making countless criminals unaccounted for because most police stations have no vehicles to track down reported cases,” Chikumbo said. “This is an impetus to spiralling cases of corruption by our police force which is now taking bribes in order to open an investigation. Our hospitals need to be stocked with medicine so the government should give more resources to the Health and Child Care ministry.” Other residents said more resources should be allocated to cater for people living with disabilities and other vulnerable members of the community.

Our hospitals need to be stocked with medicine so the government should give more resources to the Health and Child Care ministry.” Other residents said more resources should be allocated to cater for people living with disabilities and other vulnerable members of the community.","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.net/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2020/11/c6745d85-0266-4503-a73f-77eeef725278.jpg","ImageHeight":400,"ImageWidth":600,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"7B933AE8-03CD-4CB2-9499-82145E19CFCF","SourceName":"NewsDay Zimbabwe - Everyday News for Everyday People","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.newsday.co.zw","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":"E42D645B-BA17-4D13-BFC2-D2671A5DBF45","IsSponsored":true,"SponsorName":"NSBE Boston","SmallSponsorLogoUrl":"24x24/nsbe-logo.png","SponsorUrl":"https://www.nsbeboston.org/","HasSmallSponsorLogo":true,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":null,"IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-10-20T02:00:59Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":179938,"FactUId":"59BCA198-3EBE-49AA-83C7-7E37423745FA","Slug":"cut-military-expenditure-govt-told","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Cut military expenditure, govt told","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/cut-military-expenditure-govt-told","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":false,"SponsorRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/Sponsor/aaa3b791-f8ce-43df-8c2b-9a3c4e1af285/7fd83f8d-0bb1-4153-a6e3-0d1e7777f4b5/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.prideacs.org","SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/fb1ea788-61e4-4962-aeb0-5a482a961051/7fd83f8d-0bb1-4153-a6e3-0d1e7777f4b5/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.npr.org%2Ftags%2F125955816%2Fblack-history","DisplayText":"
