President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

The White House spokesperson said the Aug. 28 speech will be delivered during the Let Freedom Ring ceremony, which will take place on the Lincoln Memorial steps.

Exactly 50 years after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led the approximately 250,000 strong march to the National Mall in a fight for freedom and employment opportunities, President Obama will come to honor this monumental event.

The March on Washington respectively added pressure to Congress to pass the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts in 1964 and 1965.

In June, the Supreme Court terminated a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. President Obama has called the decision a setback.
