Oprah. Ava. Gayle.  These are some of the most influential African American women in media and entertainment who have one thing in common:    They don’t want to be called auntie.     According to a June 2019 post on OprahDaily.com, Oprah explained, 'I cringe being called Auntie or Mama by anybody other than my nieces or godchildren. Except if I’m in Africa, where it’s the custom for everybody to refer to anyone older as 'Sister,' or 'Auntie,' depending on the age difference.” Likewise, in separate social media posts, Oprah’s best friend television host Gayle King and award-winning director Ava Duvernay shared that
