Transport operators that are part of the Zupco franchise scheme are up in arms against the government-owned company, which they say is underpaying them for the use of their vehicles.

Under the Zupco scheme, transport operators with public passenger vehicles certified fit by the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) hire them out to the government-owned company and they are paid after some period.

Katsvairo said transport operators were willing to be part of the Zupco franchise scheme, but only after its conditions are improved.

Katsvairo said post-lockdown, government must put in place a workable system that would also accommodate transport players outside the Zupco scheme.

\"In the long-term and post-lockdown and opening up of industry, government must put in place a transport policy and laws to assist with the organisation of those left out of Zupco that they don't come back and operate again as individuals, but under associations or companies in order to maintain an orderly and professional transport system,\" he added.

After almost 100 days of closure, the South African passenger rail service is operating again as the country’s lockdown restrictions ease up.

Passenger numbers are limited, masks are mandatory, and the trains are sanitised after each trip. South Africa is still heading towards its COVID-19 outbreak peak, and some passengers worry that more could be done to keep them safe.

Passengers are encouraged to arrive at stations wearing facial masks and observe physical distancing. The country’s virus figures continue to shoot up – at a point accounting for a third of cases in Africa.

Confirmed cases = 159,333

Active cases = 80,559

Recoveries = 76,025

Number of deaths = 2,749

Named Career Ambassador, a title equivalent to a four-star general, U.S. ambassador to six different countries, Terence A. Todman was an outstanding diplomat in the service of the United States. He challenged the racial prejudice he encountered at the State Department, paving the way for hiring of more people of color there and he was a pioneer in integrating human rights issues into foreign policy.

Clarence Alphonso Todman was born on March 13, 1926, in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands to parents Alphonso and Rachael Todman, grocery clerk/stevedore, and laundress/maid. He attended the local university for one year and then was drafted into the US Army.  He served four years in the Army and when stationed in post-World War II Japan, he helped organize that defeated nation’s first post-war elections.

Returning to finish college at Polytechnic Institute, Puerto Rico, he received a Master’s Degree from Syracuse University (New York) in 1951 and passed the Foreign Service Exam for a career in the U.S. State Department the following year.  Although initially denied employment there because his accent was not 100 percent American,” Todman soon found only low level positions were open to blacks in the State Department. He fought this practice and the long standing assumption that black State Department employees would only be accepted for postings in Africa.

Todman served first at the United Nations Interim Program between 1952 and 1957 and in India between 1957 and 1960.  He took intensive training in Arabic in Tunis, Tunisia between 1960 and 1962. He later became fluent in French, Spanish, and Russian and sought to learn the cultures of the nations where he was posted.

In 1969 Todman took his first ambassadorial assignment in the country of Chad, serving there until 1972.  Over his forty year career he was also U.S. ambassador to Guinea, Costa Rica, Spain, Denmark, and Argentina. During the Carter Administration he was named assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American affairs. He served as envoy to Spain from 1978

Kruger’s parents were respectable farmers of Dutch descent on the northern outskirts of the British Cape Colony. He had little formal education but was able to express himself clearly in writing. Of more importance was the religious instruction he received from his parents according to the strict tenets of Dutch Calvinism. When he was 10, his family took part in the general emigration of frontier farmers who sought to found an independent political existence in the northern interior. As a young boy, he was strongly influenced by the stirring events of the period when the emigrants had to struggle against the warlike tribes surrounding them and to establish an orderly government of their own.

While still in his teens, Kruger played a part in public life as a local field-cornet, a post in which civil and military duties were combined. In January 1852 he was present when the Transvaal leader, Andries Pretorius, concluded the Sand River Convention with representatives of Great Britain, by which the independence of the Afrikaners (Boers) north of the Vaal River was recognized. He took part in 1855–56 as member of a commission that drew up the constitution of the new republic. During the civil disturbances of 1861–64, he played a prominent part as commandant general in unifying and pacifying the country in support of constitutional authority.

Upon the British annexation of the Transvaal in 1877, Kruger became the recognized champion of his people in the struggle to regain independence. With that purpose in mind, he visited England in 1877 and 1878, and, when he failed to persuade the government of Benjamin Disraeli to undo the annexation, he helped organize a movement of passive resistance to British administration in the Transvaal. In 1880 he pinned his hopes to the promises of William Gladstone, the Liberal leader. Disappointed when the new Liberal government failed to live up to his expectations, Kruger succeeded in gaining the sympathy and political support of the Cape Colony against the British attempt to

South Africa's biomedical response has been exemplary, but it has failed to mobilise social movements essential for tackling public health crises.

There has been an exemplary biomedical response at the state level: the government acted swiftly to \"flatten the curve\"; it rolled out a sweeping programme of community screening, testing and contact tracing; and it put in place clinical facilities for palliative care.

Crucial food security interventions such as the South African National School Nutrition Programme - the largest of its kind of Africa - have been suspended, while other emergency food distribution measures have been beset by corruption, meddling and bureaucratic bungling.

One such sign was when the interim CEO of the Solidarity Fund, created to enable the private sector and civil society to support the COVID-19 response, announced the Fund would stop providing emergency food rations in favour of measures to \"activate communities to do things for themselves\".

That social movement for public health around the HIV/AIDS pandemic successfully linked poor people's demands for better medical care with demands to address the social and economic causes of inequality.

David Kato was founding father of Uganda’s emergent gay rights movement, the first openly gay man in the country, and an international gay rights activist. He was brutally murdered in January 2011.

Born around 1964, Kato joined his twin brother John Wassawa Mulamba and family in their ancestral village of Nakawala. He reported being raised in a religiously conservative home where homosexuality was not accepted. Kato attended King’s College Budo and Kyambogo University in Uganda and then taught at the Nile Vocational Institute in Njeru. The school dismissed him in 1991 without benefits because of his sexual orientation. He relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa in the mid-1990s to continue teaching and witnessed that nation’s transformation from apartheid to a multicultural democracy. He first went public as a gay man while there.

Kato returned to Uganda in 1998 and soon afterwards held Uganda’s first gay rights news conference in the nation’s capital, Kampala. By doing so, he became the first person in his home country to openly admit his homosexuality. In apparent retaliation, police officers arrested and beat him and detained him for a week. This would be the first of his three arrests for being gay.

Kato started teaching again in 2002 when he joined the faculty at St. Herman Nkoni Primary School in the Masaka district of Kampala. In 2004, Kato co-founded the gay rights group, Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), in Kampala and then worked for the organization as a litigation/advocacy officer.

In October 2010, a Ugandan newspaper, Rolling Stone (no association to the U.S. magazine), published a piece entitled “Hang Them,” listing photos and addresses for the most prominent 100 gay men and lesbians in Uganda, including Kato. In response, he and two other activists sued the paper. In January 2011, Uganda’s High Court ordered the newspaper to pay damages to the three litigants and to stop printing information about LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgendered Intersexual) persons.

Oprahs Dogs:

Oprah loves her dogs and has made them the focus of several of her shows. Sophie and Solomon are Oprahs black and brown Cocker Spaniels. When Oprah decided to add more children to the home, she asked Cesar Millan to help the dogs, especially Sophie, to adjust to one another. Oprah added 3 Golden Retrievers in 2005, Luke, Layla, and Gracie. While training the puppies, Tamar Gellar helped Oprah learn techniques to teach her dogs proper manners.

In May 2007, Oprahs Golden Retriever, Gracie, died from choking on a ball that belonged to Sophie.

Oprahs Homes:

While Oprah spends much of her time taping in Chicago, her main residence is in Montecito, California. The 42 acre estate is named The Promised Land and has amazing ocean and mountain views. Oprah also owns a large amount of land in Maui, Hawaii with a renovated American Farmhouse which was designed by Elissa Cullman. Oprah sold her once cherished 164 acre farm in LaPorte County, Indiana. The farm she purchased in 1988 contained a 9700 square-foot home and swimming pool. While taping, Oprah lives in a penthouse condo in Chicago.

Oprahs Love:

Stedman Graham has been Oprahs long-time love since 1986. While the couple was engaged to be married in 1992, the ceremony never happened. Many fans, to this day, are waiting for Oprah and Stedman to tie the knot. In 2003, Oprah told Essence Magazine, The truth of the matter is, had we gotten married we wouldnt be together now, because in no way is this a traditional relationship.

Oprahs Friends:

Gayle King is well known as Oprahs best friend, but she also has many other close friends that she holds very dear to her heart. The Friends that work closely with Oprah on her show and radio programs include Dr. Maya Angelou, Bob Greene and Nate Burkus. Outside of work, Oprah is close with John Travolta, Sidney Poitier, Maria Shriver, Forest Whitaker, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, and many, many others.

As South Africa prepares to launch the continent’s first coronavirus vaccine trial, the Rainbow Nation has opened a new field hospital for people with COVID-19 in a de-commissioned Volkswagen plant.

According to the country’s health authorities, 3,300 beds have been installed in the new field hospital, bringing the total number of beds across the country to 27,000 for COVID-19 patients at more than 400 quarantine sites.

“A total of three thousand three hundred beds, coming along with oxygen reticulation. All of this is a very important combination of what our needs are at this point, this has been now established within record time”, Dr. Zweli Mkhize, South African Minister of Health said.

Coronavirus cases in South Africa rose to more than 100,000 Monday, while the number of deaths neared 2,000.

About 3,500 doctors and nurses have contracted the virus since the start of the pandemic, and at least 34 have died of respiratory illness.

But the southern African nation is in the process of vaccinating 2,000 people with the vaccine, developed by the Oxford Jenner Institute, which is already being evaluated in Britain, where 4,000 participants have enrolled in the trial.

South Africa declared a second wave of coronavirus as the number of cases surge.

The country registered a record 6,709 infections on Wednesday, bringing the total number to 828,598, with 22,574 deaths.

South Africa is the country hardest hit by COVID-19 on the continent.

The health minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement he expected faster-rising numbers with a higher peak than in the first wave.

The wave is being driven by the provinces of Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the economic hub Gauteng, Mkhize said.

The latest surge comes as millions prepare to travel to their home towns during the Christmas period.

South Africa introduced one of the world's most stringent lockdowns in March during the first wave but progressively eased measures as cases dropped.

Last week President Cyril Ramaphosa announced new restrictions such as a curfew and a ban on alcohol sales.

South African student Kholofelo Mohale was over the moon as she moved back into her room at the University of the Witwatersrand after struggling with months of e-learning.

\"Wits\" shuttered its campus to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and students had to adapt almost overnight to online teaching, streamed lectures and taking tests at home.

\"My parents are poor but they sold part of their seasonal harvest and bought me a smart phone,\" said Annet Karabo, a 28-year-old social science student at Uganda Christian University in the central district of Mukono.

In Cameroon, journalism student Floriane Wiltort said her big problem was lack of consistency and teaching materials in the course uploaded by her university, in the southern city of Douala.

Because of the poor connection, the education ministry waived fees for online learning and declared that missed coursework could be completed in person when the students were allowed to return.
