South African sprinter Derrick Mokaleng has been making waves in the world of track and field since his days at University of Johannesburg, winning a gold medal in the 400m at the Confederation of University and College Sports Associations 2016 games in Zimbabwe.

Mokaleng brought the heat to the TCU team, finishing third at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in the 600 yard in his first year.

However, his crowning moment was ranking second in school history for the indoor 400m with his NCAA time of 45.68, as well as winning Male Breakout Athlete of the Year for 2018.

Now a senior, Mokaleng was named a Big 12 Second-Team academic honoree, which goes to student athletes who maintain a 3.00-3.19 GPA.

We are proud to name Derrick Mokaleng our Student Athlete of the Week.
