A November 26 letter from the presidency asked the head of Uganda's national drug authority to 'work out a mechanism' to clear the importation of the vaccines.

China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.

One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.

China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.

On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.

Record cases

Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.

The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.

Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Dar es Salaam — Efforts by individual countries in the East Africa region to tackle the spread of the novel coronavirus across borders yesterday saw Kenya ban the movement of pedestrians and passenger s in and out of the country.

It has also emerged that when the Heads of State of the East African Community held a virtual consultative meeting on the pandemic on May 12, Tanzania reportedly requested for a bilateral meeting with Rwanda to iron out outstanding issues on the movement of cargo trucks between the two countries, according to Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vincent Biruta who was quoted by New Times newspaper of Rwanda.

Countries such as Rwanda have imposed requirememnts of a relay system that would allow handing over of cargo trucks to Rwandan drivers at border points, offloading cargo at border points as well as Covid-19 clearance certificates for truck drivers.

When addressing Kenyans from State House in Nairobi yesterday, President Kenyatta said over the last one week a total of 43 positive cases recorded in the country had been imported from the neighbouring Somalia and Tanzania.

The President further noted that 78 truck drivers who were foreign nationals tested positive for Covid-19 and were denied entry into Kenya at different border crossings.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says the United States is “not in total control” of the coronavirus pandemic and predicts the nation could eventually see 100,000 new COVID-19 cases a day.

As of Monday, the U.S. averaged nearly 40,000 new cases daily over the past week, a 40% increase compared to data — compiled by Johns Hopkins University — from a week ago, CNBC reports.

“We are now having 40,000-plus new cases a day.

According to Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, 50% of all new COVID-19 cases are coming from Florida, California, Texas and Arizona.

“Congregation at a bar, inside, is bad news,” Fauci said, citing the surge in COVID-19 cases in the U.S.

“I think we need to emphasize the responsibility that we have both as individuals and as part of a societal effort to end the epidemic that we all have to play a part in that,” Fauci added.

Los Angeles City Mayor Eric Garcetti delivered news surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak.

June 23 marked the day mobile testing sites came online, the mission is to make testing flexible and available to more people across the county.

Mayor Garcetti continued with a very straight forward message and he outlined four points: COVID-19 is still here, COVID-19 is still dangerous, Los Angeles is adding more testing, and lastly Garcetti emphasized the need for precaution.

Garcetti touched on updates within renters assistance, on June 23, the county announced the extension of the eviction moratorium.

Mayor Garcetti is looking for ways to change the narrative of underserved and overlooked groups within the city, through multiple levels of resources that include renters assistance, Angeleno Cards, and a number of programs geared towards families that are currently experiencing their darkest days.

Governor JB Pritzker on Monday announced the launch of Illinois’ statewide contact tracing program for COVID-19 cases in two pilot counties as the state begins to fine-tune its latest weapon to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Contact tracing, which was used early on in the state’s coronavirus outbreak when the number of cases was manageably small, consists of tracers interviewing people who have newly tested positive about who they had significant contact with in the past 48 hours.

The two counties were chosen “for having significant needs in terms of case numbers in vulnerable populations, a capacity to grow their contact tracing and great existing collaborations of public health personnel, medical students and volunteers already on the ground,” Pritzker said.

The governor said Illinois’ contact tracing program will consist of three parts: a disease reporting software, a common management platform and an app to be used by coronavirus patients and the people they came in contact with.

People interested in becoming part of the contact tracing program, including becoming a tracer, should visit IDPH’s on Monday reported 2,294 new cases of COVID-19, as well as 59 new deaths.
