'Bucked the Southern System': Carter's civil rights legacy

MACON, Ga. -- President Jimmy Carter was known for many things throughout his life, but one that stands out from the rest is civil rights. He was motivated to oppose the political climate of racial segregation and support the growing civil rights movement. Carter’s stance on civil rights is something that can be traced back to when he was just a boy in Georgia, says Steven Hochman, Director of Research at the Carter Center, and Assistant to President Carter.
