Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.
Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.
In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.
Swollen feet
In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.
Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.
Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

To celebrate the new label, a jet black double-decker bus with some of the city’s local rap stars and DJs played music in France’s second-largest city.
“It’s good that the club is doing that,” said rapper Hollis the Infame, a lifelong Marseille fan who wears the team’s white jersey in his videos.
“I think I was a fan of Marseille even before I was born, it’s in our genes. ”
Emilie Hauck, head of A&R, told AFP that OM Records is a “50-50 joint venture” between the club and BMG and “the first time that a major in the record industry and a club like OM came together to create a label ”.
Marseille President Jacques-Henri Eyraud declared: “Marseille has been a cradle of French rap and hip-hop since the IAM collective and the links between OM and local artists have been strong for years”.
IAM has been one of the most important French rap groups since the late 1980s and has long collaborated with the iconic American group Wu-Tang Clan.
“The launch of OM Records strengthens this bond and symbolizes the club’s desire to promote the unique energy that emanates from Marseille and its inhabitants all over the world,” added Eyraud.
The new label will provide opportunities for artists and groups from “Marseille, southern France and Africa,” said Sylvain Gazaignes, BMG Managing Director for France.
The first album to be released on OM Records will be a compilation titled “Friday 13th” and will be produced by the four people behind the B18 label created in the tough neighborhoods of northern Marseille a year ago.

Black-owned media giant Essence Communications, which publishes Essence magazine, has responded to allegations made by an anonymous group of women that it created a toxic work culture for employees with the announcement of an independent review and a new interim CEO.
In a post on Medium titled “The Truth About Essence” published on Sunday, the women—under the name #BlackFemaleAnonymous—allege that “the once exalted media brand dedicated to Black women has been hijacked by cultural and corporate greed and an unhinged abuse of power.”
“The company’s longstanding pattern of gross mistreatment and abuse of its Black female employees is the biggest open secret in the media business,” the post reads.

It is believed that modern humans originate from the rift valley region of East Africa, and as well as fossilized hominid remains, archaeologists have uncovered Africas oldest human settlement in Tanzania.
From around first Millennium CE the region was settled by Bantu speaking peoples who migrated from the west and north. The coastal port of Kilwa was established around 800 CE by Arab traders, and Persians similarly settled Pemba and Zanzibar.
By 1200 CE the distinctive mix of Arabs, Persians and Africans had developed into Swahili culture.
Vasco da Gama sailed up the coast in 1498, and the coastal zone soon fell under the control of Portuguese. By the early 1700s Zanzibar had become a center for the Omani Arab slave trade.
In the mid 1880s, the German Carl Peters began exploring the region, and by 1891 the colony of German East Africa had been created. In 1890, following its campaign to end the slave trade in the region, Britain made Zanzibar a protectorate.
German East Africa was made a British mandate after World War I, and renamed Tanganyika. The Tanganyika African National Union, TANU, came together to oppose British rule in 1954 -- they achieved internal self-government in 1958, and independence on 9 December 1961.
TANUs leader Julius Nyerere became prime minister, and then, when a republic was proclaimed on 9 December 1962, he became president.
Nyerere introduced ujamma, a form of African socialism based on cooperative agriculture.
Zanzibar won independence on 10 December 1963 and on 26 April 1964 merged with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
During Nyereres rule, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (Revolutionary State Party) was declared the only legal political party in Tanzania.
Nyerere retired from the presidency in 1985, and in 1992 the consitution was amended to allow multi-party democracy.
