Indeed, the boasting by the government claiming to be on top of the situation in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in schools is not good and borders on misguided arrogance. It is a fake bravery amid the situation getting out of hand. Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri, the chairperson of the COVID-19 inter-ministerial taskforce, on Tuesday presenting Cabinet’s collective wisdom, or lack thereof, said that there was no need to close schools now. She said that the number of those infected by the deadly COVID-19 stood at only 332. Come on, the disease is infectious and once an individual gets it, especially at a school, it is common knowledge that many will be infected and the most logical thing to do is to close the facility. By the way, it is the same Muchinguri, typical of the authorities’ ignorance on the matter, who earlier in the year said COVID-19 was God’s punishment on the West for sanctioning Zimbabwe. COVID-19 is real. It is sad that government is just risking the lives of innocent children and teachers by insisting that schools should remain open. There is no capacity by the government to provide essentials in schools and the spike in numbers confirms that. Despite the denial by the government, all is not well in schools and why Cabinet is choosing not to listen to Members of Parliament who advised them to close down schools immediately betrays logic. The Parliamentary portfolio committee on Primary and Secondary Education chaired by Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga made it clear that opening schools was not ideal and cited several reasons that were canned by the government. It will get worse and we can only wonder whether the government wants the situation to get worse to realise the folly of their action. Even teachers have expressed concern on the matter of reopening schools but they are being forced to attend classes even without proper personal protective equipment. It is absurd to say the least and the argument that numbers are still less is as senseless an argument as it is hazardous. The consequences of such ignorance by the government are dangerous and the regime has not only become a danger to itself but to the entire nation. Maybe they don’t care anymore and that is why they party in numbers and share pictures of their recklessness to the world.

Italian prosecutors formally put four high-ranking members of Egypt’s security forces under investigation on Thursday over the alleged 2016 kidnapping, torture and killing of Italian doctoral research student Giulio Regeni — whose body was found on a highway in Cairo. Sergio Colaiocco, a prosecutor in Rome, Italy, told a session of a special parliamentary commission on the slaying of Giulio Regeni.

Police in Mutawatawa managed to retrieve the body of Norman Nyamunda (42) while Keith Tigere (23) is still missing despite efforts by the sub-aqua-unit to locate him. Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza could not be reached for a comment as he is reportedly attending a meeting in Harare. According to a memo seen by this paper, it is reported that on December 4, at around midnight, Tigere and Nyamunda were asleep in their vehicles parked along the banks of Mazowe River in Zengeza area, under Chief Chitsungo when incessant rains hit the area. It is reported that the duo were awakened by the flooding river, before Tigere tried to drive his vehicle a Toyota Noah away from the banks but was swept away. Nyamunda reportedly tried to rescue his vehicle and a water pump before he was swept by the floods as well. The matter was reported at ZRP Mutawatawa who retrieved the body of Nyamunda about 100m away from the scene while his Toyota Corolla was found downstream. On December 7, the ZRP Sub Aqua unit began a search for the missing Tigere and managed to discover his vehicle buried under the sand while his body was nowhere to be found. Some well-wishers tried to pull out the Toyota Noah vehicle using an excavator but was dismantled in the process to due to sand inside.

BY PHYLLIS MBANJE Nurses are up in arms with government after officials demanded that they apologise for taking it to court over flexible working hours, saying that government sees itself as if it is above the law. The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (Zina) yesterday said they were dismayed by the attitude shown by the government towards nurses. They said the government should actually be apologising to them for acting in a manner which the court said was incorrect. “The attitude is not only in contempt of court but it is also grossly unjust, with the conduct being to coerce nurses into submission to unlawful directives,” Zina president Enock Dongo said. According to Zina, on Monday this week, nurses at Harare Hospital as well as at United Bulawayo Hospital were asked to write apology letters. “All this is being done because government can simply ignore a court order if it wants. “It is an undeniable fact that the Zimbabwe Nurses Association took government to court twice in the last month. On both occasions, the High Court ruled that nurses were correct and were entitled as a matter of right to continue with the flexible working hour system. Both judgments are a matter of public record under case numbers HC6507/20 and HC7099/20,” he said. The nurses said they now felt like they have been stripped of their decency, dignity and livelihoods with threats of withholding their December salaries. “It has now become evidently clear that the government sees itself as if it is above the law. “This is the only conclusion to be derived from the actions of a government that ignores two clear court orders. “It is government as well which should stop acting in contempt of court judgments and allow nurses to work flexible hours. “Lastly, it is government which should pay nurses their salaries as ordered by the court rather than put its own conditions on things,” Dongo said. The nurses said even if government did not respect their profession, it should at least respect the courts.

by Kevin Mapasure FORMER Caps United and Warriors leftback Cephas Chimedza has revealed the heartbreak he suffered 15 years ago after missing out on an opportunity to break into the English second-tier league, the Championship. Chimedza shared letters from December 2004 and January 2005 on his Twitter page that show arrangements were being made for him to travel to England for trials with Sheffield United. The trials did not materialise in the end and after his followers on Twitter inquired why he never made it to the United Kingdom he only said the intermediary disappeared, after too many people got involved in the deal. 'The guy who was the intermediary didn't want any other people to get involved, so he just disappeared on the last minute,' he responded after followers, mostly Zimbabwean football fans got curious. Former Warriors midfielder Clemence Matawu, who recently announced retirement after a long and illustrious career, suggested that Chimedza should write a book about his experience as he had many interesting stories to share. Chimedza shared a letter from Sheffield United to the British High Commission in Harare requesting that he be granted a visa to travel for trials. 'We request that the above player be allowed to trial at Sheffield United,' the club wrote on December 29 2004, few weeks after Chimedza had been voted Soccer Star of the Year after leading Caps United to a league title. Then Caps United boss, Twine Phiri, consented to Chimedza trailing at Sheffield United. 'As per the attached letter from Sheffield United requesting the above mentioned player, Caps United hereby authorise him to proceed for trials as requested,' part of the letter read. Chimedza was pencilled to leave on January 5, but the trip never materialised. Instead, he was to move to Belgium that year to join Germinal Beershot and also played for Sint Truidense, before moving to lower leagues. ON December 9 2020, consumers and internet users nationwide struggled to access internet services as one of the biggest internet services provider ZOL Zimbabwe’s system was not working. The company issued a statement and this was one of the most widely felt disruptions of internet service platforms since the 2019 national internet shutdown. The disruptions had far-reaching implications on the provision of downstream services. In Zimbabwe, the ability to access critical services such as healthcare, education, banking and commerce can literally depend on the reliability of the internet at all times and the broader business online in the age of the global pandemic, COVID-19. Since the outbreak of the pandemic which limited face-to-face meetings, the majority of organisations are performing their business online. In 2016, the Information Communication Technology, and Cyber Security ministry issued the Postal and Telecommunications (Quality Services) Regulations. These quality service regulations apply to the quality of voice calls, SMS, internet and mobile data, customer services and postal services. It is not enough for both internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile network operators (MNOs), to blame system upgrades for prolonged interruptions of internet services. ISPs should uphold internet services standards to ensure that disruptions of internet services are minimised and consumer rights are protected while engaging on the platforms available. As Zimbabwe, as is the case with rest of the international community, grapples with containing the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, network resilience and responsiveness becomes a strategic national issue. Accordingly, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe second-quarter 2020 industry report noted: lThe COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the critical importance that telecommunications infrastructure plays in keeping businesses, governments, and societies connected and running. lAs a result, many telecom players providing broadband have benefitted from a surge in the traffic of data as shown in the report. l The exercise of the right to freedom of expression and to access information using the internet are central to the enjoyment of other rights and essential to bridging the digital divide.
