Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.
Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.
In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.
Swollen feet
In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.
Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.
Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.
FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.
As the recount of votes from the March 2nd general elections crawls along it must not be forgotten that what should have been an orderly process with a result within two or three days was obscenely overturned by the Returning Officer for District Four, Clairmont Mingo when he introduced numbers from a spreadsheet which were pure fiction.
Up to that point, half of the District Four results had been transparently tabulated using the mandatory Statements of Poll (SoPs) and it had apparently become clear to Mr Mingo and conspirators from APNU+AFC and GECOM that the result did not favour the incumbent and some plan had to be put in place to rig.
Her disinterest was repeated when Mr Mingo made a second infamous declaration on the night of March 13 at the GECOM headquarters in Kingston having duplicated the same indignities despite attending on that same day a contempt of court hearing before Chief Justice George in which he was admonished to present the SoPs for full viewing by all parties.
Given her career-long dependence on evidence in making decisions, Ms Singh can easily examine for herself the SoPs, the Statements of Recount and Mr Mingo’s “figures” to determine the truth for herself.
When the properly concluded and recorded recount result is presented to GECOM for final certification, Ms Singh has no recourse to the discredited Mingo tally of March 13.

Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale has told Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli to keep off Jubilee Party affairs after the trade unionist called for his removal.
On Saturday, Mr Atwoli said that senators did well in ousting Tharaka-Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki as Senate deputy speaker after he failed to attend Jubilee Party’s meeting convened by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi.
Interestingly, the Bills Mr Atwoli is talking about are government-sponsored Bills, which according to the Constitution can only come in the House through the office of the leader of majority.
The leader of majority acts as the linkage between the Executive and the National Assembly including tabling government Bills and motions in the House.
Mr Duale told Mr Atwoli to start thinking of how he will hand over the Cotu leadership to the younger generation.
According to Michael McDonald, a political scientist at the University of Florida, “The real outstanding question is whether or not we’re going to have an election system that can deliver for the voters and whether or not we’re going to be able to manage everybody being able to vote in November.”
Voting rights have recently been heavily politicized as most states (as of May 2020) cannot accurately distribute mail-in or absentee ballots to an extensive amount of residents and some believe that this form of voting favors one political party over another.
Also, this form of voting tends to be more popular with older citizens because they may not be able to get to the polling centers and currently they are the most “at-risk” age group for COVID-19.
The upcoming Georgia party primary elections are being conducted by mail, and registered voters have been sent absentee ballot applications by their counties, but we don’t know yet whether the general election in November will be conducted the same way.

The commission has been tasked to investigate human rights violations and abuses in Burundi since 2015.
Burundi has a history of the highest level of violence and the violations of human rights in the context of electoral process.

How low a depth of despair and despondency the SLPP/APC rivalry has sunk is clearly illustrated by a video that has gone viral on Facebook, depicting two Sierra Leoneans, apparently on a manhunt in the streets of Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for the real or fictitious “Adebayor”.
Adebayor is accused by SLPP supporters and the Sierra Leone Government of inciting and fuelling the spate and wave of riots in Sierra Leone, from the relative comfort of his living room in The Netherlands, with a cheese burger in one hand and a KFC chicken leg in the other hand.
The video showed the two SLPP supporters visiting a McDonalds and a police station as part of their itinerary, and was swiftly followed by another gentleman, claiming to be the hunted Adebayor posing outside the same police station.

In 1983 Mel King changed Boston's political history when he became the first Black mayoral candidate in the city's history to win a preliminary election and run in the general election for control of Boston City Hall. While defeated in the runoff by Ray Flynn, he gathered 30 percent of the general vote and 90 percent of the Black vote. A former five-time elected state representative from Lower Roxbury and the South End, King currently heads MIT's Community Fellows Program. For more than 35 years he and his wife Joyce have been steadfast advocates for community control and improvement in Boston.
Nkrumah, Kwame kwä´mā nkro͞o´mä [key], 1909–72, African political leader, prime minister (1957–60) and president (1960–66) of Ghana. The son of a goldsmith, he was educated at mission schools in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) and became a teacher. A brilliant student, he studied (1935–45) in the United States and then went to London. While studying law there he held important posts in African nationalist organizations, espousing Pan-Africanism . Returning to the Gold Coast in 1947, he was made general secretary of the United Gold Coast Convention party by its founder, Dr. J. B. Danquah, who was later jailed by Nkrumah. In 1949, Nkrumah formed his own party, the Convention Peoples party, and led a series of strikes and boycotts for self-government. He was imprisoned (1950) by the British for sedition, but was released in 1951 when his party swept the general election he became prime minister in 1952. Under his leadership the Gold Coast achieved (1957) independence and, in 1960, became the Republic of Ghana. Probably the leading proponent of pan-Africanism, he effected a loose union with Guinea (1959) and Mali (1960). Following a course of international political neutrality, he secured economic and technical aid from the United States and the Soviet Union. As president, Nkrumah suppressed political opponents, and in 1961, after a series of strikes, made himself supreme commander of the armed forces he also assumed absolute control of the Convention Peoples party. Several attempts were made on his life. He increasingly isolated himself from the populace, meanwhile promoting a cult of personality. In 1966, while he was on a trip to Beijing, his government was overthrown. He subsequently took refuge in Guinea.

Stop the inclusion of fraudulent results: Under Renamo pressure, the parties agreed an electoral court system which could intervene to redress misconduct and errors by election commissions, STAEs, and polling stations.
Civil society members to be non-partisan
Members of the National Elections Commission (CNE) \"do not represent the public or private institutions or political or social institutions they come from, and defend the national interest\", says the electoral law.
For the 2008-9 elections, parliament (AR) agreed a dramatic change - a majority of CNE members, including the chair (presidente) were nominated by Civil Society Organisations (CSO) to try to force some independence and neutrality.
But this agreement between Frelimo and Renamo to select party aligned CSO members is not specified in the electoral law and clearly goes against the spirit of the law.

Mozambique stretches for 1,535 mi (2,470 km) along Africas southeast coast. It is nearly twice the size of California. Tanzania is to the north; Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to the west; and South Africa and Swaziland to the south. The country is generally a low-lying plateau broken up by 25 sizable rivers that flow into the Indian Ocean. The largest is the Zambezi, which provides access to central Africa.

Bantu speakers migrated to Mozambique in the first millennium, and Arab and Swahili traders settled the region thereafter. It was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498 and first colonized by Portugal in 1505. By 1510, the Portuguese had control of all of the former Arab sultanates on the east African coast. Guerrilla activity began in 1963, and became so effective by 1973 that Portugal was forced to dispatch 40,000 troops to fight the rebels. The fundamentalist Islamic Salvation Front (Front Islamique du Salut; FIS) won the largest number of votes in the countrys first-ever parliamentary elections in Dec. 1991. To thwart the electoral results, the army canceled the general election, which plunged the country into a bloody civil war. An estimated 100,000 people have been massacred by Islamic terrorists since war began in Jan. 1992. The undeclared civil war escalated in its brutality and senselessness in 1997–1998. Islamic extremists, who had originally focused their attacks on government officials and then shifted to intellectuals and journalists, abandoned political motivations entirely and targeted defenseless villagers. The mass slaughters were as savage as they were random, and the government was markedly ineffectual in stemming the violence.
Abdel-Aziz Bouteflikas ascension to the presidency in April 1999 was initially expected to bring peace and some economic improvement to this desperate war-torn country. Bouteflika, however, remains locked in power struggles with the military, whose support is crucial. Despite the appearance of democracy, Algeria remains in essence a military dictatorship. In 2001 violence by Islamic militants was again on the rise, and the long-disaffected Berber minority engaged in several large-scale protests.

As the nation nears the conclusion of the Recount of the votes cast in the March 2nd general elections, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) yesterday called upon all the people of Guyana and each of the contesting parties to recognize and accept the result of the Recount, agreed to by both President David Granger and General Secretary of the PPP/C Bharrat Jagdeo, as the final decision and declaration of the Guyana Elections Commission.
“The Private Sector especially calls upon the people of our country, regardless of political preferences, to respect and uphold the rule of law and to keep the peace in their individual and collective well-being and in the interest of our beloved country”, a release from the PSC said.

The Baringo Senator Gideon Moi-led party is out to wrest Rift Valley from Deputy President Dr William Ruto’s stranglehold with Senator Moi on Sunday playing host to five leaders from the region in Kabarak in a five-hour long meeting.
Although the details of the closed-door meeting were scanty, a brief statement from Senator Moi’s office said the leaders consulted on the current state of affairs in the country and how to cushion local residents from the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
