The African Methodist Episcopal Church, which broke away from the Methodist Church in 1816 due to discrimination, is the oldest continuously produced publication by people of African descent in the United States. Established in Philadelphia in 1852, the newspaper began as a publication to cover church news but soon expanded to cover politics and other news. One of its most notable contributions was its "Information Wanted" column, which published notices from individuals looking for missing family members separated by the Civil War or by being sold to another slave owner. Today, the headquarters of the paper is in Nashville, where a printed publication exists alongside their digital offering.
