[Nation] Unlike spouses of the big five in the political arena, Ida Odinga, the wife of ODM chief Raila Odinga, is said to be so powerful that her influence in the party cannot be ignored.
Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.
Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.
In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.
Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.
Swollen feet
In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.
Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.
Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.
FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.
The ongoing purge of National Assembly and Senate leaders allied to DP Ruto and rapid changes in House committees, they say, are calculated at paving the way for the Deputy President's impeachment.
\"They have a plan to impeach the DP, but we will fight to protect his position,\" Jubilee deputy secretary-general Caleb Kositany, the de facto spokesperson of the Ruto faction of the party, told the Nation onMonday.
Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju and vice-chairman David Murathe were reluctant to comment on the alleged impeachment plans against the DP.
Tiaty MP William Kamket, a member of Kanu, which recently formalised its post-election deal with Jubilee, did not, mince his words over the plot to oust the DP.
The Senate Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chairman, Mr Samson Cherargei, an ally of the DP, has called for the opening of the 2017 presidential election servers \"as ordered by the Supreme Court\" during the first presidential petition of 2017 so that Kenyans can know the truth.
It's 'Our Fault': Nextdoor CEO Takes Blame For Deleting Of Black Lives Matter Posts
As protests swept the nation following the police killing of George Floyd, there was a surge of reports that Nextdoor, the hyperlocal social media app, was censoring posts about Black Lives Matter and racial injustice.
In an interview with NPR, Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar said the company should have moved more quickly to protect posts related to Black Lives Matter by providing clearer guidance.
Those guidelines have now been revised to state that conversations about racial inequality and Black Lives Matter are allowed on Nextdoor.
Friar has apologized to Black users who have said they do not feel welcomed or respected on the app, vowing that racism has no place on Nextdoor.
\"We recognize that is an underrepresented group on Nextdoor,\" Friar said of Black users.
OWNERS of Harvest House, a Harare CBD building which was being used by the Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance, have given the beleaguered opposition authority to continue using the property as the ownership wrangle takes centre stage.
\"Harvest House (Pvt) Ltd owns a certain piece of land situated in the district of Salisbury called Stand 854 Salisbury Lands measuring 892 square meters, together with all buildings and improvements there on known as Harvest House, 44 Nelson Mandela Avenue, Harare (the property).
The MDC Alliance, since formation, Makone said, has been has enjoyed uninterrupted occupation of the disputed property with the permission and blessing of the company.
He added, \"The MDC Alliance does not own the property, it is in occupation with the permission and blessing of the company.
Another co-director of the building, Timothy James Neil also supported the claim saying \"I confirm that, as the rightful authority of Harvest House also known as Morgan Tsvangirai House the rightful occupants are the MDC Alliance.
He did not acknowledge that such an apology was recommended, two years earlier, by the national Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) in its final report.
But the statement Kenyatta made with opposition leader Raila Odinga did not mention the TJRC or its report either, even though they had addressed the issues raised in their statement.
As a candidate for the August 2017 presidential election, Odinga - and his lieutenants - had made the TJRC report a campaign issue, calling on the government to implement it as a way of addressing historical injustices in Kenya.
Prior to March 2018 Odinga and other opposition leaders said they would not recognise Kenyatta's government after successfully challenging the results of the August 2017 presidential election and boycotting the repeat October 2017 election.
The TJRC, whose mandate ended with the publication of the report, recommended the government form an implementation committee to oversee and coordinate the work needed to make the TJRC's wide-ranging recommendations a reality.
