MDC died with Tsvangirai: Gutu - NewsDay Zimbabwe

BY MOSES MATENGA FORMER MDC-T vice-president Obert Gutu, who defected to Zanu PF last week, says he crossed the floor after realising that the main opposition party had long been buried together with its late founder Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018. He told NewsDay that he decided to join Zanu PF for its ideological clarity, adding that it took him two years to make the decision. Gutu and former MDC Alliance senator James Makore joined the ruling party last week and were welcomed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other senior party officials during a ceremony held at State House. “I took a decision to join Zanu PF after a lengthy process. I have been in the MDC for over 20 years after starting from a low position as organising secretary for Harare North district. I think the party just lost direction. In 2002, there was unity and the vibe and solidarity, but I don’t know what happened over time. There was backbiting, camps, money exchanging hands and that happened around 2004,” he said. “There was now a direct attack on Tsvangirai, being labelled a dictator, and it would appear he had his own intelligence, hence did what he did. Morgan would not openly show anger. Even if insulted, he would take it in and I think that was his strength and he would manage people. If Tsvangirai’s succession had been well-handled, the party would have been stronger.” Gutu claimed that those that now assert to have liked Tsvangirai were the loudest in fighting him. “Makore and a group of some elderly people stood with Tsvangirai at that time and they include Morgan Femai, the late Cephas Makuyana and others. (Elias) Mudzuri had a rural mobilising strategy that was vibrant. There was no Twitter that time and they really went on the ground just like what Zanu PF is doing now. ” He claimed that the old guard in the MDC were now bitter as they worked for the party but remain as unsung heroes. “The MDC has not healed since 2005. People say I hate (MDC Alliance leader Nelson) Chamisa), I don’t. Why should I? He is one of the few who know my village home, having been there with Tsvangirai and a few others and was here when my daughter graduated and even came with his wife,” Gutu said. “I can tell you the MDC went with Tsvangirai. It was buried with Tsvangirai in Humanikwa village.” Tsvangirai succumbed to colon cancer on February 14, 2018 and was buried at his rural home in Buhera. Follow Moses on Twitter @mosesmatenga

Sporadic gunshots were heard in Lagos on Friday as security forces patrolled Nigeria's biggest city after days of unrest following the shooting of protesters that sparked condemnation at home and abroad.

President Muhammadu Buhari warned demonstrators in a televised address on Thursday not to \"undermine national security\" as he called for an end to widespread protests gripping Africa's most populous country.

The 78-year-old leader was speaking for the first time since the shooting in Lagos on Tuesday, although he did not directly address the incident.

He appealed to the youth to \"resist the temptation of being used by some subversive elements to cause chaos\".

\"For you to do otherwise will amount to undermining national security and the law and order situation. Under no circumstances will this be tolerated,\" Buhari said.

- 'Please stay indoors' -

Nigeria, where many live in extreme poverty and where the median age is 18, is a tinderbox of economic and social grievances.

\"Police officers are currently patrolling major parts of the city to ensure the safety of residents. Please stay indoors,\" Lagos State Police Command said on Friday.

Protests against police abuse erupted on October 8 after a video of an officer allegedly killing a civilian went viral.

Despite the disbanding of the police unit accused of brutality, the federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), protests spread and violence escalated.

Anger spread further after pictures and videos on social media showed security forces shooting on a peaceful crowd of around 1,000 protesters on Tuesday.

Amnesty International said 12 people were killed in the incident, with a total of 56 people dead in the unrest across the country.

- 'Rushing to judgement' -

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for an immediate investigation into violence by security forces, which has also triggered condemnation by the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union and others.

Nigeria's president shrugged off the international concern.

\"We thank you and urge you all to seek to know all the facts available before taking a position or rushing to judgement and making hasty pronouncements,\" Buhari said.

The spreading of \"deliberate falsehood and misinformation, in particular through social media\" was, he said, \"a ploy to mislead the unwary within and outside Nigeria into unfair judgement and disruptive behaviour.\"

After the president's speech, a key protest group told its followers to \"stay home\" but many made it clear that the movement would continue.

\"The past two weeks have been tough for many Nigerians, most specifically the last two days,\" the Feminist Coalition said in a statement.

\"We hereby encourage all young Nigerians to stay safe, stay home, and observe the mandated curfew in your state.\"

Others in the youth-led movement insist that the demonstrations will continue.

\"Everybody, get your PVC (electoral card) ready,\" tweeted Afrobeats star Davido.

\"This was just practice. We go again! Now we must deploy our unity and experienc

guest column :Sandra Liebenberg THE coronavirus pandemic has killed over a million people globally and disrupted healthcare and political systems, economies, social bonds and religious practices. What can South Africa’s Bill of Rights and international human rights treaties contribute to coronavirus responses and recovery strategies in the country and globally? My central argument is that human rights provide tools to help States build fairer societies and economies. Such societies will be more resilient to future shocks. A human rights-based approach to the pandemic is based on values. It prioritises the most disadvantaged and vulnerable and it is holistic. It also highlights international assistance and cooperation. Value-based approach The values of human dignity, equality and freedom lie at the heart of human rights, and are the founding values of South Africa’s constitution. These values require the State and private actors to recognise that every life is equally valuable. Everyone should have the civil and political freedoms — and the economic, social and cultural means — to develop to their full potential. Governments can promote these values by acknowledging people’s agency. People should have meaningful opportunities to participate in response and recovery programmes. For example, a broad range of civil society bodies must get a chance to shape the budgetary decisions underlying economic recovery. The goal of all response measures should be to create an environment in which all can live in dignity without excessive inequalities on grounds of race, gender and socio-economic status. Setting priorities Human rights help governments set priorities in responding to the pandemic. People who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable should be the central focus. The pandemic and lockdowns have had the most severe impact on people living in poverty. In South Africa, that overwhelmingly means black people. Among them are people in overcrowded informal settlements without adequate water or the space to comply with social distance guidelines. Also harshly affected are workers in the informal sector, migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers. Many have not been able to access economic relief. Because traditional gender roles persist, women have had to bear the biggest burden of child care, home schooling and domestic work while trying to keep their jobs. Human rights require States to put the needs of such groups first when it comes to budgets, laws, policies and programmes. Economic reforms and other pandemic responses should be based on a systematic human rights impact assessment. Interdependence and accountability The third contribution of human rights is that they oblige governments to develop a holistic, integrated response to the pandemic. South Africa’s constitution and international human rights law recognise that all human rights — civil, political, economic, social, cultural and environmental — are interdependent and interrelated. This means the right to life and health must be protected through science-based me

Voters in Seychelles are casting their ballots in the presidential and parliamentary elections spanning three days.

Saturday was the main and last day of voting. The exercise had opened on Thursday for voters on fringe islands and essential workers such as hospital staff in the Indian Ocean island country.

74,600 people are eligible to vote.

Most of the Indian Ocean islands making up the Seychelles, a prized honeymoon destination famed for white beaches and lush vegetation, are uninhabited and the archipelago's 98,000 residents mainly live on the islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.

The opposition is hoping to unseat incumbent president Danny Faure, in power since 2016. Faure was not elected but took over after his boss, James Michel, resigned as president.

Faure is running under the United Seychelles party, which has been in power since 1977.

His main rival is the Anglican priest Wavel Ramkalawan, who is taking his sixth shot at the presidency and lost by only 193 votes to Michel in an unprecedented second round of voting in 2015.

Virus and economy

The main concern of voters is the economic situation in the country, which has suffered the loss of vital tourism -- its main earner -- because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Seychelles has recorded only 149 mostly imported cases, but the virus has been a key campaign issue, with the health minister banning election rallies which would have been a barometer of support for various candidates in a country without a polling institute.

The campaign has mainly happened over social media, where the opposition and its supporters are the most active, and on television where the country held its first ever debates between the candidates, which proved extremely popular.

Since the start of the pandemic, the economy has slowed significantly, with some 700 Seychellois losing their jobs, according to government figures.

And while average income is among the highest in Africa, the national statistics agency says that about 40 percent of Seychellois live in poverty because of the high cost of living.

Another key theme of the campaign has been corruption, a largely taboo topic in the tiny country where business and politics are often intertwined.
