BY STEPHEN CHADENGA A DILAPIDATED Pfende Club House in Gweru city’s ward 2 has been turned into a clinic, easing the burden on people from the area who used to walk a long distance to Whawha Prison Clinic to access health services, Southern Eye has learnt. Gweru Urban legislator Brian Dube (MDC Alliance), who spearheaded the project, said they were putting final touches to the structure before it is handed over to Gweru City Council for official opening. “The place was a dilapidated small building that we demolished and reconstructed to a standard modern clinic as prescribed by health guidelines,” Dube said. “This clinic will have all facilities for primary health care to help the people in ward 2 who have been walking to Whawha Clinic.” Ward 2 resident Sheila Runzombe said: “As women, we are elated that we now have a clinic in this ward and I would want to thank the MP for coming up with this project.” Last year, Dube helped in turning Ivene Club House into a state-of-the-art clinic before also handing it over to council. China has about five COVID-19 vaccine candidates at different levels of trials. It was not clear what vaccine was being imported into Uganda.
One of the frontrunners is the Sinopharm vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Product, a unit of Sinopharm’s China National Biotec Group (CNBG).
On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates said the vaccine has 86% efficacy, citing an interim analysis of late-stage clinical trials.
China has used the drug to vaccinate up to a million people under its emergency use program.
On Tuesday, Morocco said it was ordering up to 10 million doses of the vaccine.
Record cases
Uganda on Monday registered 701 new COVID-19 cases, the highest-ever daily increase, bringing its national count to 23,200.
The new cases were out of the 5,578 samples tested for the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the country's health ministry said in a statement.
Tuesday's tally was 606, the second-highest ever number of new infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the east African country to 23,860.
Health authorities have blamed ongoing election campaigns which have drawn huge crowds for the rise in infections.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his Kenyan counterpart President Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated a new border post on Wednesday in the Kenyan town of Mayale to bolster trade.
Abiy is on a two-day visit to neighbouring Kenya, his first official trip since launching military operations against the leaders of the dissident Tigray region last month.
\"We want to see Moyale becoming the Dubai of this whole region,\" Kenyatta said.
The market town lies roughly halfway between the Kenyan and Ethiopian capitals -- which are 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) apart. It has no airport and a population of fewer than 40,000.
The two heads of state also presided over the ceremonial opening of a 500km stretch of the highway connecting Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
Cross-border violence has traditionally weakened trade and displaced civilians, as Kenyatta acknowledged.
\"We should work on peace and security of this area. Because peace is a foundation for everything we are aspiring to transform the lives of our people.
\"If we could eliminate al-Shabab and OLA (Oromo Liberation Army) from this region, you can see how these people can be transformed into one family, one country, one people, with great joy and cooperation.\"

The same year, thousands of Ethiopians fled to Kenya for safety during another spate of violence, involving the Ethiopian military.
Abiy said such clashes were now in the past.

Abiy made no mention of the crisis in Tigray during his visit to Moyale.

Kenya may select the Oxford-AstraZeneca Plc Covid-19 vaccine because it doesn’t require complex cold storage, unlike those of Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc., according to a health ministry official. The 23-year-old vocalist broke into the limelight last year with Kure, a collaboration with rapper Ti Gonzi. In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style yesterday, Ishan, who recently released an extended play (EP) titled Bhundu Pop, said creating a sound that connects with an audience was his main goal. “I have never felt pressured to match or surpass a song, the pressure I only have is to become a better version of myself each and every day,” he said. “The goal is always to make good music that I connect with and in turn connects with everyone, and I am happy that music we have made as well connects with people the way I did while I was making this project.” The nine-track EP that he produced alongside Gangster Madeit, Texas, Rayo, Lloyd Soul, Boi Tricky and Young DLC features artistes such as Gze, Gemma, Tamy Moyo and Nutty O. Ishan said the EP, that was inspired by his upbringing in rural Mvurwi was a culmination of work that had been shelved over the years. “I was raised in Mvurwi and we would wake up everyday going to herd cattle. Those moments inspired me to become the musician I am today. So by Bhundu I mean those bush moments,” he said. Although he concedes that like many local musicians plans to grow his brand have been dealt a huge blow by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ishan envisions a better 2021. “There is more growth to be expected as an artiste and brand-wise, so that means more songs, more collaborations and a bit of business ventures. John O'Rourke, European Union ambassador in Algeria, remembers the former archbishop fondly, \"He was a charming person full of depth, wisdom, kindness. Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo narrowly beat his long-time rival John Mahama to win a second term, the electoral commission announced on Wednesday.
But Ghana's main opposition party has rejected the results of the presidential and legislative vote, citing alleged irregularities.
Akufo-Addo, 76, won by a slim margin securing 51.59% of the total votes cast, while opposition leader former President John Mahama secured 47.36%.
In his victory speech, Akufo-Addo called for unity.
\"Now is the time, irrespective of political affiliations, to unite, join hands and stand shoulder to shoulder,\" he told his cheering supporters.
Local and international election monitors have said that the elections were transparent, free and fair.
But tensions rose on Monday after Mahama,62, claimed to have won a parliamentary majority and warned Akufo-Addo against stealing the vote.
Mahama alleged that Akufo-Addo had harnessed the military in a bid to sway the outcome, a claim the government said was false.
\"You cannot use the military to try and overturn some of the results in constituencies that we have won. We will resist any attempts to subvert the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people,\" Mahama said.
'Prosperous and progressive Ghana'
The West African country is known as a bastion of stability and democracy in the region but police said five people were killed in election-related violence.
An urgent task for the next government will be to improve living standards and bolster growth, which has been hammered by the coronavirus pandemic.
\"There could be a tendency for an incumbent, who has just secured a second term, to take it easy and relax,\" Akufo-Addo said.
\"I am of a different character. I give you my word that I will continue to work very hard to build a prosperous and progressive Ghana, for which we yearn.\"
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, turnout was high, with over 13 million people voting (79 percent of registered voters).
Severely hit by the pandemic, growth in the nation of 30 million people is expected to fall this year to its lowest in three decades, to 0.9 percent according to the International Monetary Fund, a steep decline from 6.5 percent growth in 2019.
The full count of the 275 parliamentary seats has not been announced and is expected to be very close between Akufo-Addo's centre-right New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Mahama's National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.
