While Zimbabwe are not playing many, if any, Test, ODI and T20I matches at the moment, Brendan Taylor continues to showcase the country's cricketing talent around the world. Taylor is currently with the Kandy Tuskers in the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. He's playing alongside former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, South African pace ace Dale Steyn and other international stars. The right-handed Taylor was especially impressive at the start of the tournament, striking a match-winning half-century against the Galle Gladiators. The opposition bowling attack featured Pakistan pair Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Amir. He followed that up with a fine 46 against a Jaffna Stallions seam attack spearheaded by Pakistani Usman Shinwari. The Zimbabwean's effort this time, however, was unable to ensure victory for the Tuskers. The Lanka Premier League is an increasingly popular prospect on a busy domestic T20 calendar. Popular betting sites continue to price up various events and markets for the tournament, including the outright winner. 888sport, bet365 and other firms, for example, have Taylor's Tuskers priced at 4/1 for the maiden tournament title. Taylor is no stranger to facing Pakistan bowlers – at domestic and international level. He played limited-overs cricket for Zimbabwe, against the Pakistanis, as recently as November 2020. His showings were solid during the ODI series, but modest across the T20I leg of the tour. 'I feel very lucky to get this Man of the Match award as I feel Shaheen should have got it. You're up against a very skilled attack at the death and they were too good at the end. It was that skill level at the death that took it away from us,' said Taylor at the time, after collecting a century in defeat to a Pakistan unit triumphant on the back of left-arm seamer Shaheen Afridi's five-wicket haul. Taylor missed a couple of years of international cricket after signing with Nottinghamshire in English county competition. That international hiatus ended in 2017, when he returned for the men in red. He has remained a key force for the Zimbabweans ever since. He can play as a wicketkeeper, too, not just a specialist batsman. He's captained the side as well – and could do so again if required. Away from the international circuit and besides his stint with the Tuskers in the LPL, Taylor has a fine domestic T20 cricket pedigree. He has represented the Chittagong Kings in the Bangladesh Premier League – and Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. Locally, he has been a star in the Logan Cup as well. He is also one of a few Zimbabwean cricketers to have been afforded a contract in the Indian Premier League. Taylor was with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Countrymen such as Ray Price, Tatenda Taibu and a few others also played in the IPL. Taylor is coached by Indian Lalchand Rajput, who is the head coach of Zimbabwe. BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA SUSPENDED Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) Henrietta Rushwaya and his four accomplices in the gold smuggling case have put the State on notice that they will challenge their placement on remand if it fails to provide a trial date on January 8, 2021. Rushwaya is being jointly charged with Pakistani businessman Ali Muhammad, Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives Stephen Tserayi and Raphios Mufandauya and her ZMF colleague Gift Karanda on smuggling charges, illegal possession of gold, criminal abuse of office and defeating the course of justice. Rushwaya has another separate case in which she is being accused of attempting to bribe a police officer when she was arrested on gold smuggling. The five are being accused of attempting to smuggle 6kg of gold worth US$333 000 out of the country before they were caught at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Representing the State, prosecutor Charles Muchemwa said investigations on the case were still underway and were expected to be complete by January 8, next year The accused persons, through their lawyers, submitted before magistrate Ngoni Nduna yesterday that they will challenge further remand if they were not provided with a trial date on their next appearance in court. Rushwaya, Tserayi, Mufandauya and Karanda are in custody after they were denied bail by Nduna. Muhammad was released on $100 000 bail. They appealed against the ruling at the High Court. In her bail appeal submissions at the High Court, Rushwaya represented by lawyer Tapson Dzvetero, submitted that she was a suitable candidate for bail, arguing that Nduna's conclusion that she had connections abroad was based on speculation as there was no evidence to support it. CIO operative Mufandauya through his lawyer Joshua Chirambwe, also challenged the lower court ruling, arguing that the magistrate had adopted a selective approach in the bail proceedings when he granted Muhammad bail on the basis that he had been exonerated by Rushwaya, who on the same statement, had also exonerated Mufandauya. He submitted that by that decision he was denied his right of equal treatment before the law.

BY FORTUNE MBELE DESPITE scoring an equaliser for struggling Kaizer Chiefs to earn a point against Black Leopards on Wednesday, coach Gavin Hunt believes Warriors star Khama Billiat has room to do better. It was Billiat's first goal of the season, after another struggle last season under German gaffer Ernst Middendorp. Another Warriors man Ovidy Karuru caused a near upset for Amakhosi with a brace in his debut for Leopards before Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Billiat found the net for Chiefs to settle for a draw at the FNB Stadium. It was an important equaliser by Billiat for Kaiser Chiefs, who have failed to make a mark in the start of the 2020/2021 DStv Premiership and Hunt told Kick-off.com that it was a great goal, but he still expects more from Billiat. “Any goal he scores is a great goal, but there is a lot to work on, especially on his overall performance. He scored, he got us the equaliser, so we will move on and try and eradicate the mistakes we have made,' Hunt said. Meanwhile, Zimbabwean and Kaizer Chiefs legend Robson Muchichwa has told the same publication that Amakhosi's poor showing must be blamed on senior players. 'It's a pity Gavin Hunt could not sign players, but I hope that after December he would be able to sort out a lot of stuff. You know when you go to a big club like Kaizer Chiefs and you don't go with one or two players of your choice, it becomes a problem. That is what hit him (Hunt) hard,' Muchichwa said. He added: “I don't want to lie. I am disappointed even from last season with some senior players, whereby you end up pointing at the coach, saying the coach is doing this and that. You know, for me, Middendorp was sent off by the players – they are the ones who got him fired, because you can't tell me you win many games and all of a sudden, you’re stuck and then say the coach's tactics are not working.
