THE late socialite and businessman Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure’s body was taken to Doves Funerals parlour yesterday despite Nyaradzo Life Assurance being the first to manage it, an episode which set tongues wagging amid claims that there was politics at play between the two funeral service providers. BY WINSTONE ANTONIO/KENNEDY NYAVAYA Ginimbi (36) died in a horror car accident along Borrowdale road in Harare on Sunday when his Rolls Royce Wraith collided head-on with a Honda Fit while driving back to his Domboshava mansion in the company of Malawian Limumba Karim, fitness trainer and video vixen Mitchel “Mimi Moana” Amuli and Mozambican model and socialite Alichia Adams. Karim, Amuli and Adams were trapped inside the car and burnt beyond recognition after the collision, while Ginimbi was pulled out just before the vehicle exploded into flames. Speculative reports emerged that Ginimbi’s close associates, who are linked to the ruling Zanu PF party, had arm-twisted the deceased’s family to dump Nyaradzo for Doves. “A lot of politics has been at play with regards to Ginimbi’s funeral. There seems to be some influence by his close associates. His family had initially engaged Nyaradzo, but his close associates, who are heavily involved in politics, were not happy about the family’s initial decision to engage Nyaradzo,” a source said. “These are the same guys who had proposed the all-white party farewell, which was shot down by the family. They, however, managed to convince the family to move the body from Nyaradzo to Doves hoping that they would be able to get some favours they wanted from the authorities, who are said to behind this funeral service company.” Without getting much into detail, Nyaradzo marketing officer Grace Chimedza yesterday said they just respected Ginimbi’s family decision to have his body moved to Doves. A family source told NewsDay Weekender that Ginimbi’s family had approached Nyaradzo first, but they later discovered that he had a policy with Doves South Africa, and that was when they then collected the body from Nyaradzo and handed it over to Doves to handle everything. Ginimbi will be buried today at his million-dollar mansion in a customised Versace coffin with a medusa print. The coffin was imported from South Africa, courtesy of his associates under the banner Friends of Ginimbi. Friends of Ginimbi’s spokesperson Ronald Muzambe confirmed to NewsDay Weekender that the coffin had come from South Africa, though he could not disclose all the costs involved. “There was no coffin that was bought prior to Ginimbi’s death, there was no such thing. There are multiple stories doing the rounds with regards the issue of the coffin. Many people wanted to buy the coffin for Ginimbi. We then decided that no individual should buy the coffin and the coffin was brought through contributions,” he said. “After putting the contributions together, some money was used to buy the coffin and some to cover funeral expenses. Hundreds of supporters of Ace Magashule, the Secretary-General of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, staged protests on Friday as some even tried to force way into the magistrate's court in Bloemfontein, the capital of the Free State, where Magashule appeared for his hearing over alleged graft revolving around the equivalent of 13.9 million euros in contracts to audit houses with asbestos roofs — awarded under former president Jacob Zuma's corruption-tainted nine-year administration between 2009-2018. His successor Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to root out corruption in South Africa, which has seen the ANC at the head of national politics since the icon Nelson Mandela came into power in 1994 after the fall of the white supremacist oppressive apartheid regime.
The court appearance follows an arrest warrant issued on Tuesday over Magashule's alleged failures to conduct oversight and report corrupt dealings.
The ANC said it would monitor developments closely.

A couple of Volkswagen bigwigs say they’re baffled by how an inflammatory ad for their Golf 8 made it onto their Instagram and Facebook pages.
The ad shows a large hand of a white person pushing away a dark-skinned man from a vehicle, another lifting him up, then the first plucking him into a cafe in Buenos Aires, Argentina, called Petit Colon, French translation for the Little Colonist or Little Settler.
When criticism of the offending ad began, Volkswagen took to Instagram to say the ethnicities of the people shown are irrelevant, and it was “surprised and shocked that our Instagram story could be so misunderstood.”
“We posted a racist advertising video on Volkswagen’s Instagram channel,” Jürgen Stackmann, the company’s head of sales and marketing and Elke Heitmülle in charge of diversity, said this week in a post to social media.

The Tryal Rebellion of 1805 is a little known account of a shipboard slave uprising in the South Pacific off the coast of Chile. In 1803 a number of West African Muslims were purchased by the Spanish in what is now Senegal and put on a slave ship bound for Buenos Aires in the Spanish colony of Argentina. After their arrival they were marched across the Argentine pampas and the Andes Mountains to the Chilean port of Valparaiso. There 72 surviving Africans were placed on another Spanish ship, the Tryal, which intended to take them north to the slave markets of Peru and Ecuador.
Somewhere along that route, Babo and Mori, two leaders of the enslaved Muslims, orchestrated a successful rebellion on board the Tryal in December 1804. They took command of the ship, killing most of the Spanish crew members but holding Captain Benito Cerreno hostage. For nearly three months the freed Africans sailed the ship in the South Pacific in vain hopes of a return to Senegal. The vessels leaders were not trained sailors but they had learned the Spanish language during their years of captivity and used their knowledge of the stars to guide the ship southward along the Chilean coast.
In February 1805 the Perseverance, a New England seal hunting vessel commanded by Captain Amaso Delano, encountered the Tryal. Joining it in a sheltered harbor off the coast of Southern Chile, Delano noting that the Tryal’s badly tattered sails signaled extreme distress, boarded the vessel. He and his crew brought fresh water and food. He was led to believe that the Africans on board were crew members. Babo and Mori appeared with Captain Cerreno, refusing to leave his side because, so it appeared, of their devotion to him. When Captain Delano returned to his vessel, Cerreno broke free, jumped on the deck of the Perseverance, and exposed the deception. Delano and his crew rushed on board the Tryal and killed most of the Africans. Babo, the leader was decapitated and his head impaled on a pike. The surviving Africans were turned over to
THE Zimbabwe consul in South Africa, Melody Chaurura, has announced that only five buses will be cleared daily to transport Zimbabwean returnees from the neighbouring country. BY NQOBANI NDLOVU Chaurura said this in response to reports that there was chaos at the country’s ports of entry with Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) officials refusing to clear buses ferrying returnees. She said all buses to be cleared should have a clearance certificate from the consulate to avoid being denied entry into Zimbabwe. “All buses involved in the repatriation of Zimbabwean nationals from South Africa are with immediate effect required to obtain travel clearance from the consulate of Zimbabwe in Johannesburg two days before the intended departure date,” she said in a notice. “This applies to all except for those travelling from Cape provinces who should approach the Zimbabwe consulate in Cape Town for clearance. To avoid congestion at the port of entry, a minimum of five buses will be cleared to travel per day.” Passengers and bus crew are required to have a COVID-19-free certificate obtained within 48 hours, the notice added.
