In 1969, 18-year-old Lupenga Mphande was arrested for the first time in Malawi. As an active protester against oppressive governments in Malawi and South Africa, Mphande would not find himself in a cell for the last time. In fact, he completed his bachelor's program at the University of Malawi between protests and jail time. “It was a commute between prison and the classroom, which is not a pleasant thing to do,” Mphande said.
