Former legendary Pullman Porter and activist Sollie Mitchell recently celebrated his 102nd birthday.
Born in 1918, the Jacksonville native attended Stanton High School, fought in WWII, participated in the 1963 March on Washington and worked for the railroad until he retired in 1981.
Locally Sollie’s name is synonymous with the Prince Hall Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge #377, which was renamed in his honor and is now, Sollie Mitchell Lodge #377 located in downtown Jacksonville.
