Special Olympics for AUSC Region 5 debut

The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) has made a bold decision by including Special Olympics in the 2024 edition of Region 5 Youth Games.

The biennial event will take place in Windhoek, Namibia, in July this year.

In a statement, AUSC indicates that this landmark inclusion marks a bold step forward in advancing the causes of inclusivity, equality and diversity in sport across the Southern African region.

“The AUSC Region 5’s decision to integrate Special Olympics athletes into the Youth Games reflects a progressive shift toward building sporting platforms that leave no one behind,” the statement reads.

Malawi will be among the countries making history, sending a team of Special Olympics athletes to participate in the inaugural edition.

Currently, the athletes are camping at Blantyre Teachers’ Training College, alongside their colleagues from other sports disciplines, where they are undergoing intensive training in preparation for the event.

Malawi Special Olympics National Director Enid Mauluka commended the region’s commitment to inclusive sport.

“This is not just about competition; it is about giving every young person, regardless of ability, a chance to shine at the international stage. The inclusion of Special Olympics athletes will help break down barriers and shift perceptions around intellectual disabilities,” Mauluka said.

Malawi National Council of Sports Chief Executive Officer Henry Kamata said the move was a game-changer for the country.

“This is a transformative moment for Malawi. We believe this exposure will attract greater support from both the public and private sector for Special Olympics programmes while also expanding the talent pool. For Malawi, this participation is crucial as it will enhance visibility and recognition of athletes with intellectual disabilities,” Kamata said.

The 2024 Region 5 Youth Games are expected to attract thousands of young athletes from 10 member countries, who will compete across various disciplines.

Malawi’s Special Olympics athletes will compete in the 100m and 200m sprints and long jump events.

As preparations intensify ahead of the July games, the team has indicated that it remains focused, motivated and hopeful that it will have a successful outing.
