Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday night in a national TV address spoke about the unrest that has gripped his country in recent days.
Buhari in his speech however and notably did not mention the shootings of peaceful protesters on Tuesday night in Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of the west african state, that prompted international outrage.
\"I am indeed deeply pained that innocent lives have been lost. These tragedies are uncalled for and unnecessary. Sadly there's no way whatsoever to connect these bad acts to legitimate expression of grievance of the youth of our country.\"- the 78 year old Buhari said.
There were quick reactions online from many Nigerians on the speech some have described as depressing and threatening.
Men in military uniform in widely circulated video on social media were seen opening fire without warning on thousands of peaceful protesters singing the national anthem Tuesday night in Lekki Lagos, killing at least 12 people, according to Amnesty International.
The shootings have been widely condemned but Buhari did not speak of them at all during his Thursday address. He instead urged calm.
Buhari also asked the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada and other countries in the developed world to make adequate findings before commenting on issues happening in Nigeria.
His reference can be attributed to the reactions from prominent persons around the world including a former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, and United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres calling on the Mr Buhari's government to address the demands of the young citizens asking for a better country.
\"To our neighbours in particular, and members of the international community, many of whom have expressed concern about the ongoing development in Nigeria, we thank you and urge you all to seek to know all the facts available before taking a position or rushing to judgment and making hasty pronouncements\"- he read from his TV address.
Many Nigerians had hoped to hear from their leader prior to the address but there are now groans in some quarters that Mr Buhari's speech lacked empathy and instead told the people that his government will no longer tolerate the breakdown of order in the country.

Prices of Kenyan sovereign bonds have fallen significantly since May 7 when rating agency Moody’s downgraded the country credit rating to negative from stable.
Data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) shows yields, whose increase indicate falling prices, were up by amounts ranging from a half percentage point to 1.315 percentage points within five working days between May 7-14.
“In the international market, yields on Kenya’s Eurobonds increased by an average of 82.5 basis points,” the CBK said.
On May 7, Moody’s Investors Service released a statement saying it had changed Kenya’s credit rating to reflect the escalation in financing risks of the country’s large borrowing requirements.
Nairobi — The Ministry of Education says it will require additional funding to the tune of Sh429 million to facilitate the testing and provision of protective kits for the trainers and students in the country's Techinical and Vocational Training colleges in the post-COVID-19 period.
In documents presented before the Education Committee, the ministry said trainers, trainees and all staff will be required to be tested, have face masks, soaps, sanitizers and running water before they resume learning.
The Ministry of Health recently announced that testing for COVID-19 has been pegged at Sh1,000 at all public health facilities but it is estimated that the test cost between Sh4,000- Sh10,000 depending on where they are conducted.
The Ministry said it requires a further Sh3.8billion for the expected increase in enrolment of students.
According to the Ministry, the current allocation of Sh5.2 billion only caters for the 173,000 students against a projected enrollment of 300,000 students.

“Given the severity of the outbreak in the counties in which FRCs are located and the Independent Monitor and Dr. Wise’s observations of non-compliance or spotty compliance with masking and social distancing rules, renewed and more vigorous efforts must be undertaken to transfer (children) residing at the FRCs to non-congregate settings,” Gee wrote in her order.
Judge Gee oversees the government’s compliance with the Flores Settlement Agreement, which sets limits on the length of time children can be held by ICE.
“We are grateful that the federal court has again stepped into this crisis and ordered the release of all minors to relatives in the U.S. in the next three weeks as long as the parent detained with the child wants their child released,” Schey wrote in a statement.
A SELF-PROCLAIMED Bindira-based apostolic prophet Forget Mahachi (33) was yesterday sentenced to a month in jail for assaulting his wife’s boyfriend with a stick. By SIMBARASHE SITHOLE Mahachi was sentenced on his own plea when he appeared before magistrate Samantha Dlamini. The magistrate wholly suspended the sentence on condition of good behaviour for five years. Prosecutor Vincent Marunya told the court that Mahachi discovered through text messages that his wife was cheating on him with Chipika Chigwida (36) . Upon being interrogated, the wife admitted to the cheating, accusing him of spending most of his time at the shrine. Mahachi called Chigwida to resolve the matter. When Chigwida arrived, Mahachi, in a fit of rage, struck him with a stick. Chigwida was injured and medically examined. In mitigation, Mahachi pleaded for a lighter sentence saying his wife had since deserted him. “Your worship, may you please give me a lighter sentence because my wife has since left our matrimonial home. I assume he has followed the complainant who is her boyfriend,” he said.

Ivorian President Allassane Ouattara has been sworn in for a third term in office.
The solemn ceremony was attended by 13 African counterparts as well as former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
\"Before the sovereign people of Ivory Coast, I solemnly swear on the honour to respect and faithfully defend the Constitution, to embody national unity, to ensure the continuity of the State and defend its territorial integrity\". Ouattara said as he took the oath of office.
The 78 year old won a disputed third term at the ballot box on October 31.
The opposition says he breached the constitution by seeking a third term and has mounted a campaign of \"civil disobedience\" aimed at pushing him out.
Ouattara and his supporters had argued that a 2016 revision of the constitution reset his term counter to zero.
When Ouattara won with more than 94 percent of the vote, the opposition cried foul and announced a \"transitional government\".
Several opposition leaders were arrested, with legal proceedings over \"sedition\" launched against them.
Pre- and post-election violence is reported according to an official toll to have claimed at least 85 lives since August.
The City of Cape Town has taken the decision to cancel this year’s festive lights switch-on event in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
