Boko Haram strictly opposes formal education. In 2015, Nigeria enlisted the support of neighbors Chad, Cameroon and Niger to try and defeat the group.
While the joint operations made the group lose considerable territory, they have not been able to wipe it out.

The following statement was released by the American Psychological Association following nationwide protests tied to the murder of George Floyd.
WASHINGTON — Following is a statement by Sandra L. Shullman, PhD, president of the American Psychological Association, regarding the mental health consequences of recent high-profile violent events targeting African Americans:
“George Floyd, dead after a police officer knelt on his neck.
“The deaths of innocent black people targeted specifically because of their race — often by police officers — are both deeply shocking and shockingly routine.
“We are living in a racism pandemic, which is taking a heavy psychological toll on our African American citizens.
Racism is associated with a host of psychological consequences, including depression, anxiety and other serious, sometimes debilitating conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders.

Community members in northern Uganda have remained optimistic that the COVID-19 pandemic will not cause a delay in the delivery of the judgment in Dominic Ongwen's trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Uganda, Ongwen's home country, has been under a countrywide lockdown since April 2020, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out there.
ICC prosecutors have charged Ongwen with crimes he allegedly committed as a commander of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda between July 2002 and December 2005.
The countrywide lockdown has affected many spheres of life in Uganda, including community outreach critical for keeping local populations informed about the trial.
\"The discussion about the trial has gone silent due to the pandemic, and people are wondering when it will end, so that they resume work.
By LISA MASCARO AP Congressional Correspondent WASHINGTON (AP) — Control of the Senate likely won't be decided until a January runoff in Georgia, even after Democrat Joe Biden won the White House on Saturday. That post-election cliff-hanger will determine the balance of power in Washington, as neither party appears to have a lock on a Senate majority right now. So far, the tally for the next Senate is 48 Republicans and 48 Democrats after Tuesday's election. Two seats in Georgia are headed to runoffs on Jan. 5. And seats in North Carolina and Alaska are still too early to call. […]

NEWLY appointed Minister of Labour and Social Security Mike Henry confirmed yesterday that the ministry is reviewing the control system for applicants seeking PATH grants under the COVID-19 Allocation of Resources for Employees (CARE) Programme.
Auditor General Pamela Monroe Ellis, in her second report on the handling of the benefits offered by the Government under the CARE programme, which supports Jamaicans suffering economically from the COVID-19 pandemic, recommended that the ministry takes steps to ensure that only legitimate beneficiaries who have satisfied all the requisite criteria are paid the COVID-19 PATH grants.
The auditor general said that her department conducted a review of the payment of the COVID-19 PATH grant under the system, to determine whether only qualified and legitimate PATH beneficiaries were benefiting from the CARE programme.
“In response to our audit finding, MLSS [Ministry of Labour and Social Security] placed a hold on the payment for the 8,933 beneficiaries and conducted a review to determine the actual eligibility status of each of the additional persons,” it added.
The auditor general said that, in light of the discrepancy with the 776 individuals who were inadvertently included in the May 2020 payment list, the ministry should review its systems to ensure that the controls in place to enforce the eligibility requirements for PATH beneficiaries are operating effectively to reduce the risk of irregular or erroneous payments.
The curtain on a new era of transparency in public service appeared ready to be lifted when three months before his February 2016 election win, then Opposition Leader Andrew Holness promised to publicly release his health records.
“I wouldn’t be opposed to something like that for the persons who are going to be possibly leading us – like the prime minister and the leader of the Opposition,” the representative for St Andrew West Rural said.
The use of the information by political enemies and the treatment by media must also be considered, said Professor Denise Eldemire-Shearer, a physician and professor of public health at The University of West Indies.
Two recent events – the passing of Labour and Social Security Minister Shahine Robinson and the disclosure by Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips that he had surgery for colon cancer – have triggered the latest discussion surrounding health disclosures by leaders.
“God forbids, if the minister of finance had a debilitating illness, we would certainly have a setback; similarly with health; similarly with national security,” Mitchell told The Sunday Gleaner.

Racial biases and inequalities in health care have resulted in Black Americans having poor health outcomes and higher rates of chronic diseases than whites, which has led to their being infected with the coronavirus at higher rates and being nearly twice as likely to die of it.
In the drought-hit south of Madagascar, people are forced to fill their bellies with white clay mixed with tamarind to cope with famine. More than a year of no rain is slowing leading locals to the brink of famine. The staple food like cactus fruit cannot be produced because of the drought.
\"If we had something to eat, if our saliva was enough, we would never have eaten that. But it's true that we didn't know that white clay was edible before. We tried to mix it and it worked\", Dame Zafendraza, a charcoal producer said.
In a nearby village of Ankilomarovahetsy, 9 people starved to death in September. Toharano is a housewife. She says she's quite certain that the death of her children was due to the famine.
\"My children didn't eat for three days and then died, because I, their mother, did not manage to feed them. I'm sure it was the famine that killed them. It's not something else, it's not the disease, but famine. I left early in the morning and came back in the evening, and I saw the body of my child with his eyes open\", she said.
Children have particularly struggled to digest the clay and tamarind mixture. According to the World Food Programme (WFP) in the country this causes ''belly swelling''.
Half of the population in the southern region of the Indian Ocean Island, is currently in need of emergency food aid, the UN agency said.
Théodore Mbainaissem is head of the Ambovombe office for the World Food Programme (WFP).
\"People could not go out because of the lockdown. The trucks, the bush taxis that have to commute, were not allowed and people stayed more or less in the villages. Add to that the food insecurity caused by climate change, which has been very severe this year\", he said.
The WFP said about 31 million euros are urgently needed to feed the hungry in southern Madagascar.
Climate Change
A few kilometres away in the town of Beraketa, global charity Action Against Hunger (ACF) has put up a centre in partnership with the WFP.
The centre caters for around 50 severely malnourished children and 100 other patients every week. The children are at risk of death, especially if malnutrition is complicated by diarrhoea, respiratory infections or malaria.
While droughts are not uncommon in the area, this dry spell has been compounded by climate impact. The WFP's Mbainaissem said \"for three years in some communities, two in others, there has been no rain.\"
Rising insecurity and livestock thefts have exacerbated poverty and complicated humanitarian relief efforts. The government has deployed the military to distribute food and first aid in the area. In October, President Andry Rajoelina, his wife and son gave out rations in villages.
The local head of the WFP Mbainaissem has warned of a disaster if emergency food assistance are not provided.

By PAUL J. WEBER Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — When Texas began lifting coronavirus restrictions, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott didnt wear a mask. He wouldnt let mayors enact extra precautions during one of Americas swiftest efforts to reopen. He pointed out that the White House backed his plan and gave assurances there were safe ways to go out again. Now other governors are changing pace as well with reopening their respective states. Two months later, a sharp reversal is unfolding as infections surge. The backpedaling is not just in Texas, where Abbott abruptly halted the push to loosen more []
