Edward Barter, an English mulatto was the leading slave-trader of West Afrika in the early 1700's.
He exercised greater power on the coast than the 3 leading English traders. It was a well known fact at the
time that in order to do business in the slave trade on the West Afrikan coast, you had to win his favor.
He had a fort, an army and a harem.
