"My mother and stepfather grew up during the era of Jim Crow," Dontaye Carter told VOA. Carter is the head of a public relations firm in the suburbs of Atlanta and helps lead voter registration and mobilization efforts in the area.   "Sometimes, people think of that time as being ancient history, but it's not true," he said.
