Malawi Under-20 and Under-17 Women’s National Football Teams produced a piece of magic in different competitions to stay in contention.
At Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi Under 20 Women’s National Football Team kicked off to a positive start in the 2026 Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign as they beat their Central African Republic(CAR) counterparts 3-1 at Lilongwe Sunday.
Elsewhere in Windhoek, Namibia, Malawi Under-17 Girls National Football Team reached the semifinals of the Cosafa Women’s Championship with a 6-0 drubbing of Comoros.
Faluna Umali scored a hat-trick whereas Alinafe Nyirenda scored a brace. Cecilia Nzima scored a goal as the junior Scorchers reached the semi-finals following their 3-0 victory over hosts Namibia on Saturday.
Meanwhile, their elders, Malawi Under-20 Women, were not outdone as they won the match through a brace from Fatima Lali and a goal from Olivia Phikani in the first half at BNS.
CAR scored through Slyviane Passibi Sate.
The junior Scorchers finished the match with 10 players after their goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi was shown a red card inside the first half but they effectively defended the lead.
Junior Scorchers Coach Maggie Chombo-Sadik praised her charges for the win.
“Let me thank God for the victory and secondly let me thank the girls for the job well done. The girls have shown character and they have worked so hard to win this game,” Chombo-Sadik said.
Winners of the first round will advance to the second round in September.
Four teams are expected to represent Africa at the Fifa U-20 Women’s 2026 World Cup finals in Poland.
