MINISTER of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton says he and his public health team welcome the weekend curfew hours as an opportunity to control the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

“The holiday weekend [curfew] — in the eyes of the public health team, of course in deliberations, too, with the Cabinet which ultimately makes the decision — does provide an opportunity for a greater spread of the virus,” Dr Tufton said.

Dr Tufton said that the reasons behind the quarantining of some communities is based on an area being assessed as at-risk, and the public health team moving in thereafter without affecting the rest of the population.

Opposition spokesman on health, Dr Morais Guy said the Government has been referring to the need to “reopen” the economy, while ignoring that it would require guidance by data.

Dr Chang said that Jamaican public health officers have adopted a testing programme which is both efficient and better than most.

Almost 1 000 Western Cape residents are in quarantine, Premier Alan Winde announced on Wednesday.

Winde said the province's Economic Development Partnership had been tasked with helping to co-ordinate food relief, across civil society, in partnership with the City of Cape Town.

The humanitarian campaign to feed the hungry also scored a valuable goal on Wednesday after Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis received donations from Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato.

The equipment will help us to expand our outreach to residents and fill more empty stomachs,\" Ellis said

\"As a result of the severe impact of the national coronavirus lockdown, many residents have struggled to put food on the table.

He added food relief \"is the direct responsibility of national government, through the SA Social Security Agency\", but the City of Cape Town was attempting \"to fill the gaps, capacitating neighbourhood soup kitchens to feed hundreds of residents in their various communities\".

The U.S. House overwhelmingly passed legislation Thursday to ease rules on small-business owners who are participating in a loan program meant to mitigate the economic complications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new legislation was a bipartisan effort, spearheaded by two freshmen — including U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin.

“We want to make sure that money is being targeted and focused in ways that’s best for those businesses in order to stay alive,” Roy said in an interview last week as he was shepherding the bill through the chamber.

Roy’s bill loosened those rules for small business owners by:

The bill passed with some Democratic members voting on behalf of colleagues in a newly implemented — albeit controversial — vote-by-proxy process brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roy and Dean came together to write the bill as each received feedback on the PPP program from stakeholders that included small-business owners and trade groups.

The chairman of Tanzania's main opposition party, Freeman Mbowe, has been hospitalised after being attacked and injured by unknown assailants, police and party officials said on Tuesday.

Mbowe was set upon late on Monday as he returned home in the capital Dodoma, his party, Chadema, said in a statement posted on its official Twitter account.

Our priority now is his health,\" Chadema official John Mnyika told local media.

Mbowe has repeatedly accused the government of covering up the true extent of the coronavirus in Tanzania, where authorities stopped updating figures in April.

Cape Town — Covid-19 Connect, a WhatsApp service that provides users with relevant information to help make informed and effective decisions during the pandemic, was developed by Praekelt.org for South Africa, but the organisation's experience with digital health technology like MomConnect allowed it to gain the attention of the World Health Organisation.

In particular, we're rolled out in South Africa a service within the WhatsApp platform that's also available for free on USSD called HealthCheck which is essentially a screening tool that people can use to check their symptoms and understand whether they should be moving around as per regulations, if they should be self-isolating, if they should be tested or if they should seek care.

Since that launched we've had about just about a million users complete 1.5 million health checks and that's something we're going to be rolling out to other countries now that we've tested it here in South Africa as a tool that creates a feedback mechanism between citizens and the national department of health.

In South Africa, the service is available in five South African languages and we've certainly seeing through marketing how important it is to have things in these languages, but in other countries it's even more critical and so we work with ministries of health and out on-the-ground partners to translate into multiple languages before we launch.

We have interest from Bangladesh, Uganda and Ethiopia to do so but I'm sure most of them will start to take that on because it's turning into a really useful service in South Africa and as the pandemic progresses in each country, screening is going to become a critical tool more and more so I think it will be in demand by various countries.

According to the CPB, the shipment originated in Xinjiang, China, signaling potential human rights abuses of forced labor and imprisonment. The products were worth over $800,000.

Xinjiang is an autonomous rural region in the northwest of China and home to roughly 11 million Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority with a distinct culture and language. Until recently, there were many more Uyghurs in Xinjiang than Han Chinese, the ethnic majority that makes up the rest of the country.

The US State Department estimates that over one million Uyghurs have been detained in a massive network of internment camps in Xinjiang, where they are reportedly \"subjected to torture, cruel and inhumane treatment such as physical and sexual abuse, forced labor, and death.\"

In addition to political indoctrination, former detainees have told CNN that they experienced sleep deprivation, lack of food and forced injections.

This is the second time this year that the CBP has seized products from China suspected to have been made from prisoner's hair.

\"It is absolutely essential that American importers ensure that the integrity of their supply chain meets the humane and ethical standards expected by the American government and by American consumers,\" said Brenda Smith, executive assistant commissioner of the CBP Office of Trade.

\"The production of these goods constitutes a very serious human rights violation, and the detention order is intended to send a clear and direct message to all entities seeking to do business with the United States that illicit and inhumane practices will not be tolerated in U.S. supply chains.\"

China has faced international scrutiny for its treatment of the Uyghurs, and in June, President Trump signed a bill into law that aimed to punish Beijing for its repression of the ethnic minority.

However, according to John Bolton's new book \"The Room Where It Happens\", Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2019 that he should \"go ahead with building the camps.\" Per Bolton's account, Trump thought that was \"exactly the right thing to do.\"
