Legends body in K40 million shortfall for medical cover

Football Legends Association (FLA) has a shortfall of K40 million to reach out to 75 football legends who need medical cover under the scheme it introduced.

This was disclosed when 18 football legends received medical cover cards at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe Wednesday.

LIPIPA—There is progress

The association’s medical cover chairperson, Noel Lipipa, said they had lined up a number of activities to generate funds.

But Lipipa appealed to the corporate world and well-wishers to support the legends.

“We have reached out to other football legends but we need a lot of resources to reach out to all the members,” Lipipa said.

So far, he said, the association has secured medical cover for 55 registered members out of 130.

Lipipa also hailed Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and Ekhaya Farms for their support towards the body.

Early this year, the association signed a partnership with Medhealth for medical cover for its registered members.

The tailor-made scheme is worth K9 million for one year.

Through the Medhealth and FLA partnership, the football legends and retired footballers will have 100 percent medical cover at some of the well-established hospitals and clinics.

Additionally, Medhealth will be providing K850,000 as a funeral cover for each member of the legends body.

Meanwhile, Fam First Vice President Christopher Madalitso Kuyera has said the association would continue to integrate some legends in its activities.

“The legends and retired footballers have what it takes to assist us to develop the game at all levels,” Kuyera said.

Some of the legends who have benefitted from the medical cover scheme were part of the 1988 East and Central African Challenge Cup winning team.
