Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) underscored its supremacy after defending the Bankers Association of Malawi (Bam) Sports Day championship at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) Sports Complex in Blantyre on Saturday.
RBM scooped 18 medals across various sporting disciplines including football, netball, weightlifting, sack race, cycling, golf and squash.
The day-long event attracted nine institutions including RBM, National Bank of Malawi (NBM), Standard Bank, Eco Bank, NBS Bank, Centenary Bank, First Capital Bank (FCB) and CDH Investment Bank (CDHIB).
RBM Deputy Governor Responsible for Operations William Matambo called for unity.
“Today we have noted that the country’s banking industry is becoming much stronger and innovative as we are striving to take the banking industry to the people.
“We can only do better and help in the economic development of the country if we work together. As Reserve Bank we are happy with the way the banking sector is developing,” Matambo said.
On RBM defending the title, Matambo said it was good to see off stiff competition in this year’s sports day

“We encourage our staff to take part in sporting activities despite their busy schedule,” he said.
Bankers Association of Malawi President (Bam) Phillip Madinga, who is also Standard Bank Chief Executive, said it was an exciting moment to bring different banks together.
“We have annually two events one of them is the Bankers Conference where we discuss where we discussed issues of national importance like how can we help in improving the country’s economy and then we have Bankers Sports Day where we discuss issues to do with wellness, fitness and enjoy sports,” Madinga said.
During the event NBM finished second with 12 medals whereas NBS Bank got 11 medals to settle for bronze. FDH Bank finished fourth with nine medals.
Eco Bank got eight whereas Standard Bank and Centenary Bank won six medals each. First Capital Bank got four and CDHIB got three.
In individual categories, Edward Chiwasa of FDH Bank was named the most valuable player in basketball whereas NBM’s Tuntufye Nyondo won a similar accolade in the volleyball section.
