The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa has reached 20,125, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Friday.
The country recorded 988 cases over the past 24 hours, Mkhize said in his daily update.
Nationwide, a total of 543,032 tests have been conducted so far, with 17,599 done in the last 24 hours, said Mkhize.
South Africa is preparing to ease the lockdown from level four to level three of a five-level system by the end of May, which will allow more businesses to reopen and greater movement of people.
As South Africa is entering the winter season when flu is common, the fight against Covid-19 will become more complicated and difficult, Mkhize said, adding the country's capabilities to fight the virus will then be put to test.

Glam Shop founder and television personality Sierra Gates is getting real about her successful career as a serial entrepreneur and starring on popular VH1 show “Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.”
She addressed her friendship with fellow cast member Karlie Redd, spoke on “LHHATL” virtual reunion rumors that have circulated and discussed how she’s been helping women start their own businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic.
I literally started with nothing, got my first shop on Peters Street — that’s a very popular strip in Atlanta — and I was already a girl boss, so basically the show and just the platform help add onto everything I was doing.”
On the show, we saw Gates form close bonds with Tokyo Vanity and Redd, but her friendship with Redd ended after the two got in a physical altercation that was on display in the March 23 episode.
When asked about the status of her and Redd’s friendship, Gates said, “We really don’t speak anymore, so that’s basically it.”

Miles college announced Thursday a “limited” number of layoffs beginning June 22 and temporary furloughs to reduce costs and cut expenses as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are doing everything we can to minimize the impact to the hard-working faculty and staff members of miles college, but we must make some painful but necessary decisions,” the school said in a statement.
The school didn’t say how many employees would be laid off or furloughed.
“We are hopeful that those furloughs will not exceed six weeks,” the school says.
“While these decisions are difficult, we remain focused on our mission to educate, motivate and prepare students for the future,” the school says.

HEALTH Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said now is the time for workers in the retail sector to step forward, roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated.
Deyalsingh made this statement on Tuesday after touring the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) in San Fernando, where food and beverage workers were being vaccinated.
Having reopened the manufacturing, construction and food sectors already, Deyalsingh said, \"We would like to open the retail sector.\"
He said various business organisations are compiling lists of retail workers in their various jurisdictions and sending them to the ministry, so they can get appointments to be vaccinated at one of the 11 mass vaccination sites or one of the two drive-through sites.
He explained, \"Members of the public should not be coming to the mass vaccination sites. These sites are being used to vaccinate major groups like food and beverage, construction and so on.\" People who are not members of any of these groups should make appointments at any of the 109 health centres in the country.
He said small, medium and large health centres can vaccinate 50, 75 and 100 people daily. \"Across the health sector they can comfortably do 7,000 a day, which is three mass vaccination sites.\"
Deyalsingh said about 1,500 people a day could be vaccinated at a mass vaccination site like SAPA.
He hoped similar numbers would be done at drive-through sites at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva and in Wallerfield, which will both be fully operational on Wednesday. At the former, which is being run by Proman, Deyalsingh said a pilot run on Monday saw 500 people vaccinated in four hours.
He also said the objective of the accelerated mass covid19 vaccination was to vaccinate 600,000 people by the end of September and inch ever closer to achieve herd immunity in Trinidad and Tobago, with 980,000 people fully vaccinated against covid19.
\"What we are doing now is ramping up significantly our vaccination programme. We now have in the country enough vaccines to vaccinate 400,000 people. That is 40 per cent of the adult population.\"
Deyalsingh was optimistic that about 200,000 people will be vaccinated by next weekend.
With herd immunity being roughly 70 per cent of the population, Deyalsingh reminded reporters that TT's 1.4 million population includes children.
\"Right now, we don't have vaccines registered in TT for the under-18s, so that knocks off 400,000 people.\"
Excluding this number, Deyalsingh said, \"So it means to achieve herd immunity, 980,000 people, which is close to 100 per cent of your adult population.\"
He said this is why \"we are making vaccines available to every adult and there will be more coming.\"
Any Pfizer vaccines that Government obtains from the United States will be dedicated only to children between 12 and 18, that is, secondary school students.
Against this background, Deyalsingh said adults should take the covid19 vaccines available to them now and not wait for the Pfizer vaccine.
\"My urge is not to do so. You may put yourself in danger.\"

Given the problems associated with the original declaration of the results for Region 4, and its outright rejection by all the local and international observers as well as the political parties contesting the elections (except APNU+AFC) as having lacked transparency and credibility, a recount was brokered by the Chair of CARICOM.
One recalls that as soon as the agreement with the Chair of CARICOM was reached for the recount and for the presence of a high-level CARICOM team to observe the exercise, one of the APNU+AFC’s candidates for the elections questioned the validity of the presence of the CARICOM team.
Concerns about the validity of the Returning Officers’ declarations
GECOM had stated that the declarations by the ten ROs, including that of the RO for Region 4, remain valid unless they are replaced by the results of the recount.
This appears to suggest that, should the recount exercise not reach a satisfactory conclusion as a basis for declaring the winner of the elections, GECOM will revert to the original declarations of the ROs to make the declaration of the winner of the elections.
Given the mounting evidence of the inflation of the tabulation results for Region 4 in favour of the APNU+AFC, as borne out so far during the recount exercise, one would therefore have to question GECOM’s decision to include the results for Region 4.
Party insiders said the resolution was allegedly targeted at, among others, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of the late Zapu founding leader Joshua Nkomo.

BY TATIRA ZWINOIRA LAFARGE Cement Zimbabwe (LCZ) has signed a multi-million-dollar vertical cement mill supply deal with Chinese firm CBMI Construction Co Ltd, the cement producer has announced. CBMI’s businesses cover materials building, power generation, water works, environment protection, power transmission and transformation, energy saving transformation and other related fields. “Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe has signed the supply contract for a multi-million dollar vertical cement mill with CBMI of China in a virtual ceremony. This state of the art cement grinding station will double the company’s production capacity, improve cement quality and position the company to expand its cement varieties,” LCZ said in a statement. “This investment will guarantee the Zimbabwean construction market of high quality and consistently available tried and trusted Lafarge cement. This signing ceremony marks the official initiation of the project which was awarded national project status in 2019 when the company announced the investment.” The announcement comes a few weeks after the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) ordered LCZ to stop operations at its integrated Harare plant due to abnormal dust emissions. As previously reported by NewsDay Business, the agency observed that the plant was repeatedly discharging dust emissions and generating fugitive dust from the kiln stack and the surrounding plant. However, following engagements with Ema, the company resumed operations, but under very strict conditions. The upcoming vertical cement mill is the most advanced technology in cement production that consists of a vertically placed large-sized machine which is equipped with some rollers used for grinding raw material into fine dust. CBMI executive director and general manager of CBMI Tong Laigou signed the agreement with LCZ director Precious Nyika. “The new cement grinding station EPC project will be built with a maximum capacity of 0,7Mta cement inside Manresa cement plant located in the east of Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe,” CBMI said. “It will become the most advanced cement grinding plant with the biggest production capacity in Zimbabwe and will significantly increase the market occupation rate, competition and influence power of Lafargeholcim and will also ease the cement supply tension in the country.” CBMI said it would continue to provide its advanced technologies, construction and service to ensure the final product is of high quality.

There has been a 50 per cent decline in the number of people being vaccinated in Tobago.
Dr Roxanne Mitchell, general manager, primary care services, Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA) made the observation at a health briefing on Thursday.
The Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development on Friday reported 14,784 people have received one dose of covid19 vaccine and 10,017 people have been jabbed twice. Last month Trinidad and Tobago received 800,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines from China.
On July 22 the Prime Minister said Tobago requested 10,000 from that shipment and “because Tobago’s population is small, whatever is requested, they would get.\"
But Mitchell said fewer people are coming forward, despite the availability of the vaccines.
“Generally, we’re seeing a slowing not only in Tobago, but nationally.
“At one point, we were doing up to 600 doses per day. We have fallen significantly, in terms of delivering approximately 300-plus vaccines per day.\"
Mitchell said a large number of people prefer not to come to the health centres for their jabs.
\"What we have noted is that Magdalena (Resort) did in fact pull some of the load from the health centres – because it was dedicated (to specific groups), it was a little more spacious and all of that down there, and people love the ambience at Magdalena.”
She said the response to the week-long drive-through site at Shaw Park Complex carpark in Scarborough, which opened on July 31, was overwhelming.
“What we’ve seen on Tuesday and Wednesday is that persons are preferring to go there because it's an easier flow, they’re in the comfort of their own vehicles, they don’t have to come out and go to the health centres and all that.”
She said the public has not uised the Mason Hall Health Centre – recently added as a vaccination site – as the authorities would have liked.
“Last week Friday we had six persons availing themselves of the vaccine. Prior to that, we had five.
\"I haven't looked at the breakdown for yesterday.
\"On Tuesday we had no one availing the system.
\"It is going slowly. We are working on the community with regard to bringing people in.\"
Jabs at elderly homes going slowly
Mitchell also revealed approximately 42 per cent of residents in elderly homes in Tobago have been fully vaccinated.
Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh recently appealed for guardians of residents to sign the consent forms for the elderly to receive their jabs.
Mitchell said so far, 42 residents have received their two doses.
She added, \"We should be delivering this week to another 12 persons the second doses.”
Mitchell later told Newsday there are around 100 residents at around nine elderly homes in Tobago – some unregistered.
She said there is still some hesitancy.
“We do have some resistance still at the few of the other homes regarding actually going in to deliver first doses. It is still sort of slow.
\"But what we have found is that there are relatives who are now bringing their charges in – whether it is through the drive-throu
