Wanderers survive Tigers scare

By Mabvuto Kambuwe & Llywellenie Mpasa:

Mighty Wanderers were made to sweat as they earned a 3-2 victory over Mighty Tigers in a thrilling TNM Super League match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre Sunday.

It was a match of two halves as Wanderers dominated the first half and Tigers had a good second half.

Wanderers, who were still basking from their 3-1 victory over Blue Eagles at the same venue last week, looked to be in the comfort zone as they led 3-0 at the break.

Francisco Madinga opened the floodgates eight minutes into the match before man-of-the-match Wisdom Mpinganjira scored a brace before the half hour mark.

His first goal came in the 16th minute before he completed a brace in the 28th minute with a beauty.

But Tigers came back a changed side in the second half as they grabbed two goals to set up a tense finish.

Harrison Kapata pulled a goal back for Tigers in the 70th minute before Grayson Msowoya scored the second goal for the KauKau Boys late on.

But the Nomads absorbed late pressure from the Kau-Kau Boys to maintain their impressive start to the season.

The win propelled Wanderers to the summit of the TNM Super League with six points from two matches, above Moyale Barracks and Karonga United on goal difference.

Wanderers Coach Bob Mpinganjira said he was pleased with their start to the season.

“We played a good game in the first half but dropped a bit in the second half. I am worried with the performance of the second half and we will rectify the mistakes,” Mpinganjira said.

On his part, Tigers coach Leo Mpulula said his side conceded easy goals.

“The boys were confused and it took time for them to settle. After pep talk, we played as a team. We could have salvaged something from the match,” Mpulula said.

In other matches, Moyale stunned Kamuzu Barracks 0-2 at Champion Stadium in Mponela, Dowa District, courtesy of Maneno Nyoni and Clever Kalambo goals to register their second win of the campaign.

Moyale are second with six points.

Karonga United also claimed their second win after beating Mafco 1-0 at Karonga Stadium courtesy of Allen Chihana’s goal.

Karonga moved to position three with six points.

Elsewhere, Mzuzu City Hammers bounced back from their opening week setback when they defeated Dedza Premier Bet Dynamos 0-1 at Dedza Stadium.

Samson Olatibsonu scored the only goal of the match.
