Tanzania's opposition leader and 2020 presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu has left the country for Brussels.

Lissu contested against incumbent president John Magufuli. He lost to him in what he described as an election held under corruption and voter intimidation.

Lissu had sought refuge in the German Embassy in Dar Es Salaam after multiple threats and fear for his life.

The opposition leader has been living with severe injuries since surviving an assasination attempt in 2017.

He had 12.8% of the electoral voteas against President Magufuli's 84%. Lissu has asked the international community not to recognize the election results.

Magufuli was sworn in for a second-five year term on Thursday November 5 in the Tanzanian capital. There was heavy p olice and army security presence ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.

Meanwhile, leaders of the East African nation's two main opposition parties, ACT Wazalendo and CHADEMA, who refuse to recognize Magufuli's win, have been charged with organizing an unlawful assembly.

BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA Transport minister Joel Biggie Matiza has been fingered in a $66 000 fuel scam by his aide who told the Harare Magistrates Court on Monday that he took 19 000 litres of fuel with the minister’s knowledge. Cephas Chiwetu, who was employed as Matiza’s personal assistant, yesterday said he gave his former boss some of the fuel coupons and kept others for stakeholders, including journalists to facilitate their covering of Cyclone Idai. Chiwetu allegedly got the fuel and a Ford Ranger on the pretext that the minister wanted to use it to visit cyclone-hit areas in Chimanimani and Chipinge. He did that several times allegedly abusing the fuel, defrauding government of $66 000. Through his lawyer Batanai Pesanai, Chiwetu pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Harare magistrate Estere Chivasa. He said Matiza was aware that he requested the fuel and the motor vehicle for his (Matiza’s) use on trips to Cyclone Idai-hit areas. But the State, represented by George Manokore, insisted that Chiwetu misrepresented that the fuel he requested from Zinara was for the minister’s use, but he converted it to his own personal use. “My former boss (Matiza) was aware of all these requisitions. I gave him some of the fuel coupons and retained some which I was to give to other stakeholders, including journalists covering the event,” Chiwetu told the court. Chiwetu allegedly got fuel from Zinara on behalf of Matiza whom he knew was at the same time being allocated fuel from his ministry for assessment of the areas affected by Cyclone Idai, according to the State. Chiwetu had been barred from driving employer vehicles after he was involved in a road traffic accident with a government vehicle, the court heard. lFollow Miriam on Twitter @FloMangwaya

Chiwetu had been barred from driving employer vehicles after he was involved in a road traffic accident with a government vehicle, the court heard. lFollow Miriam on Twitter @FloMangwaya","MaxDetailCharacters":300,"ImageUrl":"https://cdn.blackfacts.net/uploads/blackfacts/facts/2020/11/b18737b1-e6cd-4734-b470-e49799cae6bd.jpg","ImageHeight":400,"ImageWidth":668,"ImageOrientation":"landscape","HasImage":true,"CssClass":"","Layout":"","Rowspan":1,"Colspan":1,"Likes":0,"Shares":0,"ContentSourceId":"7B933AE8-03CD-4CB2-9499-82145E19CFCF","SourceName":"NewsDay Zimbabwe - Everyday News for Everyday People","ContentSourceRootUrl":"https://www.newsday.co.zw","ContentSourceIcon":null,"SponsorId":null,"IsSponsored":false,"SponsorName":null,"SmallSponsorLogoUrl":null,"SponsorUrl":null,"HasSmallSponsorLogo":false,"EffectiveDate":null,"HasEffectiveDate":false,"MonthAbbrevName":null,"FormattedDate":null,"Year":null,"Month":null,"Day":null,"LastUpdatedDate":"2023-11-25T05:14:39.027","LastUpdatedBy":null,"IsEditable":false,"InsertAd":false,"JSONFactData":"{\"date\":\"2020-11-10T22:42:37Z\"}","JsonExtData":{"date":{"ValueKind":3}},"Html":null,"Css":null,"Script":null,"ScriptHash":null,"Id":189380,"FactUId":"69DBB137-D2A0-4153-B228-660129D72F96","Slug":"aide-sucks-in-minister-in-fuel-scam","FactType":"News","VirtualSiteSlug":"blackfacts","Title":"Aide sucks in minister in fuel scam","LocalFactUrl":"/fact/aide-sucks-in-minister-in-fuel-scam","ResultCount":200,"SearchType":"OmniSearch.RelatedId"},{"FadeSummary":true,"SponsorRedirectUrl":null,"SourceRedirectUrl":"https://ai.blackfacts.com/redirect/ContentSource/a119bcee-f195-455f-814f-1bd60e6d1865/16ea386e-0d84-4195-8aa2-4d3bd6a81f12/https%3A%2F%2Fognsc.com","DisplayText":"

BY REX MPHISA CUSTOMS and excise officers will soon be trained on how to evaluate minerals as government moves to plug under-declarations of mineral exports, Mines minister Winston Chitando has said. He said his ministry and that of Finance and Economic Development, under which the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority falls, were discussing how to equip customs officers so they are able to detect possible under-declarations of exports. “We are discussing with the Ministry of Finance on the way we can have this intervention and in due course we will overcome this challenge,” he said while responding to journalists in Beitbridge on Monday. Zimbabwe has been losing billions of dollars in mineral wealth smuggling and through under-declaration of minerals which some experts in the banking and mining sectors said were some of the many methods used to externalise foreign currency. Chitando, alongside the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company officials, were touring a multi-million exploration camp in Beitbridge which was established by Alrosa, a Russian diamond firm, and ZCDC to investigate the presence of diamonds. It has already been established there are indeed diamonds on 15 special grant areas in Maitengwe and Beitbridge, which form the Malipati Diamond Project. Deliveries of gold at Fidelity Printers and Refiners has dropped over the last two years, plunging by 73% in September to close at 1,36 tonnes from 2,8 tonnes in the comparative period in prior year owing to rampant smuggling. This year’s gold deliveries are expected to end the year at 25 tonnes, nine tonnes less than what was delivered in 2018 when prices were much lower than this year. More than 34 tonnes were delivered in 2018. A high-profile court case involving suspended Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Henrietta Rushwaya over charges of attempting to smuggle gold bars weighing 6kg to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, has sparked debate in the country over leakages of the precious minerals and how much smuggling is costing the country. Many customs officers based at Beitbridge Border Post told NewsDay that they did not know all the minerals the country exported and only rubber-stamped documents presented for exports.

Even before the anti-government protests were set to start in Angola, police had their guard up and were searching pedestrians and setting up roadblocks in the capital Luanda.

Authorities have banned Wednesday's protest.

Demonstrators are demanding authorities layout concrete plans for decent living conditions and the cost of living in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Angola is a haven for oil sector expats with large pay packages and purchasing power, which is far from the reality locals live with.

Protesters are also asking for the revision of electoral legislation to guarantee free and fair elections.

Rights groups are urging Angola's authorities to respect the youth’s right to protest.

\"Angolan authorities must guarantee that protesters can exercise their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, which are protected by the Angolan constitution and international treaties ratified by the country,\" said Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for Southern Africa.

“Past peaceful protests in Angola have been met with appalling brutality by the police, with demonstrators assaulted and arrested for no other reason than demanding accountability from the authorities.\"
