By Briasia Russ Following Zaila Avant-garde's win at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Zaila has received multiple scholarships to college. From Louisiana State University to Southern University, institutions are welcoming Zaila with open arms. Due to the 14-year-old making history by becoming the first African American to win the spelling bee in 96 years, Southern University’s president Ray L. Belton offered a “Zaila Day” to honor this win.
