Critics have called it a stunt to invite sympathy. Yet Amuriat says campaigning without shoes is a protest and that those who do not get its symbolism are missing a point.

Uganda is due to hold a general election on January 14. Amuriat and another opposition candidate, Bobi Wine have had their rallies violently dispersed by security forces or been arrested.

In mid-November, scores of people were killed as security forces attempted to quell protests against the arrest and detention of Bobi Wine.

Police has accused the candidates of addressing huge gatherings in contravention of regulations on COVID-19 prevention.

Swollen feet

In an interview with one of the dailies in Uganda, Amuriat said his feet hurt a lot and has to pour cold water on them in between campaign stops for some relief.

Doctors have cautioned him on the potential danger of contracting tetanus from cuts to his feet.

Yet Amuriat remains adamant. He says by refusing to wear shoes, he’s standing in solidarity with people whose wealth and opportunities have been stolen by the country’s longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni, in power since 1986 is seeking a new term. In 2017, he changed the constitution to remove age limits that would have stopped him from seeking re-election.

FDC is Uganda’s largest opposition party. In 3 previous elections, the party fronted veteran activist and retired army colonel Kizza Besigye for president.

The Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria has painted a devastating picture of how COVID-19 and uninspiring government policy were destroying wheat production in Nigeria.

Alhaji Salim Mohammed, the national president of the Wheat Farmers Association in an extensive webinar conversation with Agriculture Journalists recently expressed anger and dismay towards government's attitude to wheat production and what it posits for the future.

The CBN Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) is a very laudable programme created by President Muhammadu Buhari, but the wheat farmers' leader feels the string attached to the programme is a huge burden on the association and the farmers.

Assuming I received a loan of N250,000, I put it into farming and I get a profit of N20,000 or N30,000 or a maximum of N40,000 out of that production circle, how do you expect me as a farmer, to pay back that loan within the shortest possible time I have.

So there has to be good synergy between the operators at the centre and the farmers at the lower level so that we can have a round table meeting to understand what the major issues are and challenges facing agricultural production in the country,\" Salim said.

The people – not just Black people – but a huge swath of America’s people – are fed up with America’s racism, spurred and nurtured by white supremacy which has given White people the false belief that they can do whatever they want forever.

The brutal and cruel murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer ignited a spark of resentment and frustration among Black people, but it also opened the eyes of many White people and people of other racial and ethnic groups.

If the economy was in danger before, it is in even more danger now, because more businesses have been adversely affected because of being burned down as this nation vents its frustration and anger at the way police have been able to denigrate and disrespect people for literally generations.

America is falling because of this president’s racism, his lack of leadership, and his inability to show empathy with the people he is leading or respect for the constitution he swore to uphold and protect.

As Putin basks in the fall of America, those who have helped this nation’s demise should shudder as they realize that they brought this country to this place, a place from which it is not going to be able to rebound.

On June 15, 2014, as part of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Summer, Rita Bender returned to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Longdale, Mississippi to give an address commemorating the church’s role in the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement.  In January 1964 Bender and her husband Mickey Schwerner went to Mississippi as field staff for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) which along with the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), worked under the umbrella of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), the organization which coordinated civil rights activities in Mississippi.  Rita and Mickey were assigned to Meridian, where with local people, including James Chaney, a young black activist, they established a community center and did outreach to surrounding counties on voter registration.  That activity drew the attention of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission and the Mississippi Ku Klux Klan.  On June 16, 1964, after the Mt. Zion Church in Longdale, Mississippi had determined to host a Freedom School, church members were beaten by the Klan, and the church was burned.  Mickey and James went to Philadelphia on June 21, 1964, along with Freedom Summer volunteer Andy Goodman, to lend their support to church members. The three were arrested by the sheriff’s deputy, held in the Philadelphia jail while the Klan members assembled.  They were murdered on the night of June 24, 1964.  The bodies were buried in an earthen dam and not discovered by the FBI until August 4. Rita Bender’s address to Mt. Zion appears below.
