The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has embarked on a mission to develop a manual for the Caf A Coaching Licence, a crucial step towards acquiring the mandate to conduct the prestigious course.
On Saturday, Fam engaged a team of experts, including sports scientists from the Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must), to work on the manual.
The team comprised renowned individuals such as Bhekuzuku Khumalo, Oscar Kanjala, former technical director John Kaputa and Flames legend Peterkins Kayira.
The team converged at Game Haven, Bvumbwe, in Thyolo District, to work on the manual, which will be submitted to Caf for approval.
Madalitso Kuyera
Fam Vice President Christopher Madalitso Kuyera expressed optimism about the project’s success, stating that the association expected to finalise the manual in July this year.
Kuyera said the association was hopeful that the manual would be approved so that they could conduct the training next year.
“The main agenda is to have more coaches that are well qualified in Africa. We are very committed to developing the game of football in all aspects. This is a top-level manual and that is why we engaged our local experts to help [us on that]. The topics are many and we are hopeful that we will be successful,” Kuyera said.
Meanwhile, Fam Technical Director Benjamin Kumwenda has said the manual would cover topics such as top player nutrition, player management, physiotherapy and sports science.
Kumwenda said the topics would ensure that Malawi’s coaches are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the sport.
“We have our colleagues from Must to help us. We need to have coaches at the top level. We need this Caf A so that Malawian coaches can be recognised at any top league in the world. If we can have coaches with the Caf A badge, the quality of our football will improve,” Kumwenda said.
On his part, Khumalo stressed the need for Malawi to start producing Caf A coaches, a move that would undoubtedly elevate the country’s football standards.
“This is very important because local coaches need to be on top of their game. Most Super League coaches have got Caf B licence and, as such, this will go a long way in helping us to have higher knowledge of the game,” Khumalo said.
